It is always sad to here about these scams as they cause soo much heartache. Banks in the UK don't send out emails either, unless in response to a specific enquiry. Even then they will not use them to mention anything which could be used for a fraud. To be on the safe side, never reply to ANY email asking you to confirm personal details.

I had an idiot ring me purporting to be from Barclays asking me to confirm my chip n pin number - NO bank would do this - besides I do not have a Barclaycard!!! - I asked him to hold for a second then went off and made a coffee, read the paper and hoovered the lounge ! hopefully the call cost him a fortune !

I really think it is about time ALL banks sent letters to ALL their customers stating that these emails are scams, and that they NEVER contact us by email.

What an awful thing to go through. I am saying this, I got stung - well almost - for just over £100 and that was from an alleged internet providor wanting confirmation of my account details that I had used to pay for a months internet connection. I had used my Barclaycard so gave them the details. Thought no more of it until my statement came with transactions in USA (We're in UK). When I contacted Barclays filled in the details of a fraud form they sent to me, they repaid the full amount into the account. That was many years ago now and the way I learnt a bitter lesson. Paypal is another area for scam. Well should I say BOGUS Paypal. If we just remember that none of these respectable insitutions will ask for personal details through an email it will serve us well. We just need to remember the golden rule: Our banks or building societies etc WILL NEVER CONTACT US THROUGH AN EMAIL ASKING FOR CONFIRMATION OF OUR ACCOUNT DETAILS. ANY EMAILS RECEIVED SHOULD BE DELETED IMMEDIATELY OR FORWARDED TO THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICES TEAMS. I hope everything gets sorted for you. The banks can do so much with regard to tracing the source of these scams so hopefully you won't be out of pocket too long. Best wishes for a speedy resolution, Lyn x x

Thanks everyone for your support, I hope no0one has to go through what we've had to today. The banks been good as well. OH feels daft for falling for it, but he's not familiar with these cons and doesn't use the internet much, thought it was geniune...It could happen to anyone I guess, especially if caught at the wrong moment!! I'm off to bed now, got a migraine from 3 hours drive and several hours trying to sort all this out!! Thanks again for all your kind words of support, they've really helped. it's brilliant to have such caring friends Carol

Hi, its not only Bank accounts ,credit card fraud is rife too.Came home last week after a few days away to a letter from my card company asking would i please ring their fraud dept, as they`d telephoned a few times. After nearly spilling my coffee I rang to find that someone had tried three times that week to place Bets on an online Betting site of £200,£86 and £28!!!! As I only usually use my card for Family research sites and AOL, the card hasn`t been out of my keeping but I did order some Fishing Tackle for my husband at the end of Sept so now they are checking if someone there had borrowed the details!!!!!! So obviously it pays to take care.

Good idea about the CC Robert, I dont expect they will produce one though, far easier and cheaper for them to just issue a card with no restrictions on worldwide usage. As you say, phishing will not go away, there are always newcomers to fall for it, (and experienced hands as well).

BobClayton

BobClayton Report 23 Oct 2006 19:02

Just a thought on that Keith. I know there are plenty of online warnings but with all the crap my banks send out I can't ever remember anything in the snail mail. There must be lots of people fairly new to computers every day. I believe banks could do much more, they KNOW about the insecure call centers abroad etc. My credit card was recently used abroad and it has NEVER left the house. Why can't I get one that's for UK use only? Bob

KeithInFujairah

KeithInFujairah Report 23 Oct 2006 18:52

Im so sorry for you, but a word of advice, Banks will NEVER e-mail you asking for confirmation of passwords etc, if you do receive such an e-mail IGNORE it. Its called phishing. I once fell for it, but very quickly realised and alerted the bank, luckily nothing was taken. Keith

I got sick of receiving e-mails from bogus banks so ad to change my address. Thing is I have never given any bank my e-mail address so I knew it was a bogus one.
