My family, in the main, seem to be totally responsible for all of the coal that was dug up from the Durham coalfields. However I have two notable exceptions: My Gt Grandfather played professional football for West Auckland and was in the team that won the World Cup twice in 1909 and 1911. (It was made into a film starring Dennis Waterman). His day job was as a railway signalman and when he was playing football my Gt Grandmother used to do the points and the signals. He got caught out as a result of the publicity and, of course, got the sack and had to move out of his signalbox home!! One of my Gt Gt Grandfathres had a huge farm and trained a horse that won the derby. He 'got in' with the Prince of Wales as a result and ended up losing the family fortune trying to keep up a playboy lifestyle! |
