'Come up and see me, make me smile' - partner gave it to me when he went back to uni, so I did. 30 years on, he still makes me smile. Jay

When I was small I would come downstairs when I couldn't sleep (was a night owl even then) and find my Mum ironing and listening to the radio, no tv then, dad on late shift, and Mum would be crying to Abide with me, which she said was her late Mother's favourite hymn - her Mother had died when my Mum was just 16. When my Mum died, she left a note of what hymns she wanted at her funeral, she wrote, 'No Liz, not Abide with me, I won't leave you with that' - did she never realise she already had. Well up whenever I hear it which is difficult as so many people choose it for their relatives' funerals. Songs - well, when I was in a relationship with a man who was still tied to someone else, and I moved away to let him sort himself out, there was Dedicated to the one I love, Mamas and Papas, which he sent to me via my mum, and Albatross by Fleetwood Mac, which I loved, and which my mum said she cried over whenever she heard it cos she missed me! Then just around the time I lost my daughter there was Emma by Hot Chocolate, and The Air that I Breathe, by the Hollies, as well as the Three Degrees When will I see you again? they also relate to my daughter's father who went to America to work a couple of months after her death. Later there was Hello Again, when I was missing the man who was to be my son's father, he was living in Malta and I had come back to England to sort things out before going back to Malta and we used to phone and write. I remember Ben by Michael Jackson, after seeing that little boy Ben on a tv programme, I used to hug my son and dance with him in my arms to that, and also to another song which I can't recall at the mo. My son used to sing Stevie Wonder's I just called to say I love you to me, he was only small but knew all the words and he and my mum were out together and found an elephant ornament with a boy elephant holding a phone and calling a girl elephant in bed, and on it was written the title of the song. I still have the ornament to this day. (I collect all things to do with elephants!) Could add more but I would be here all night! Such memories tho - music and scents must be the most evocative things.

Albatross - Fleetwood Mac reminds me of my Grandad, he used to chill out listening to it with his coffee and rum. American Trilogy - Elvis is my Mums favourite song and played every Sunday morning during my childhood without fail. Angels - Robbie constantly on the radio around the time I lost one of my babies (still can't listen to it without tears even now) Flying Without Wings - Westlife. Puts into words how I felt when my daughter was born. Follow you Follow me - Genesis. Was a song used by OH in the early days to tell me he loved me. Great thread Kris !! xx

I have found all your stories very moving, some happy, and some very sad. So I thought I would share this poem with you all, especially Purple Poinsetta who mentioned how music and scent can bring back a memory. MUSIC IS MEMORY MUSIC is memory,Music has power- to banish the present and call back the hour - of anguish and rapture, Of pleasure or pain. Time has no meaning. You live it again. Music is memory, cruel and kind, things long forgotten come back to mind. Faces and places, a party, a dance, A garden, a journey, Love, friendship, romance. . . . the breath of life's winter, the roses of June. . . . Caught in the magical web of a tune. -------------------------------
