Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 21 Oct 2006 20:51

In case anyone is interested ... !! Went again last week and the men finished building the frame for the building and the pitched roof and the kids started adding some bottles. We also painted flowers and faces on the shed, and dug over some more of the patch, transplanting some strawberries and more bulbs. Today we were then again and this is UNBELIEVABLE!! Our plot is next the the fence (unfortunately) and some of the residents have complained that our greenhouse roof is TOO HIGH !!! It is NO higher than anyone elses, but theirs are further away from the fence. So the men spent most of the day removing and lowering and replacing the roof frame. What a waste of effort, I felt so sorry for them! In the meantime we and the kids got two more large areas cleared, we weeded and hoed the bits we cleared before, planted some basil, lobelia and marigolds from the previous patch and planted some bean seeds. Luckily we left about 5 minutes before a torrential rain and hail storm. Hopefully when we go again in 2 weeks time, we can get back on with the greenhouse. Maz. XX

Hi Annie! We need 1400 bottles apparently! There is a smaller one on that same site that I think uses 650 bottles. Maz. XX

Maz, Hope the aches are now subsiding and that your youthfulness is restored! I was so excited about this idea that I've pinged details to all my friends in the hope that a local school will pick the idea up and run with it. Thank you so much for telling us all about your work. Annie x

thanks for all the replies! Elaine - it has a wood and wire frame - with posts sunk in concrete, so it should be quite sturdy! I feel about 98 today - I ache all over :-(( !!! Maz. XX

Well done Maz. What would schools do without parents helping out. When my kids were at primary school they asked for volunteers to dig a pond. Everybody said 'oh what a good idea I'll be there' well you've guessed it, 6 parents turned up. Then on Monday morning some were moaing because it wasn't finished!!!! but were they there the next weekend helping, no of course they wasn't. Give yourself a gold star lol. Sue

Maz, Well done on a fantastic initiative! Fascinated by this, I googled 'plastic bottle greenhouse' and found an instruction sheet on the moraywastebusters site - maybe this would help others who've declared an interest. Keep up the great work. Regs Annie

Hi Maz when I was on holiday in Egypt there was a house made out of bottles (glass) filled with water, they keep cool in summer and warm in winter, very even temperature. Hope yours turns out well would love to see pictures, it's good to recycle and teaches the children what life is all about, growing and using things that would have been thrown away. Chris.
