I have an Uncle Son - his sister calls him Sonny. He is in his 80's now - still called Son but his name is George. His wife calls him George. He was the only boy in the family of 5.

From www.thinkbabynames: The boy's name Sonny is pronounced SUN-ee. It is of English origin, and its meaning is 'son.' A nickname, sometimes friendly and sometimes a little condescending. Also a short form of Santino. Entertainer Sonny Bono. Sonny has 2 variant forms: Sonnie and Sunny

A friend of mine called her lad Sonny and I have heard of at least two others who have that as their main Christian name.

We have two toddlers at my nursery called Sonny. My Great Uncle was called Sonny although his real name was Edward, he was the first born male so I guess it was just a nickname that stuck, Carol x

My dad used to refer to his Aunt Sis. I always presumed her name was Cicely until after dad died and I found in a book he had spelt it Sis. Even then I thought it was just his hopeless spelling, but when I got into genealogy I found her name was Annie Kate Elizabeth. She was the sister of dads father, who obviously called her Sis, hence she became dads Aunt Sis.

Thanks everyone. Came across an old photo of my grans-had a woman and a boy about 10 or so in it, on the back she had written Kit and Sonny. So just wondered if it was maybe short for something. thanks x

You'll probably laugh, but it's an Old English abbreviation for the name, 'Somerset' :-) Also, I have a Cousin Kit, which is short for Kathleen. Any help?

It has been used as a proper christian name too, for a few years.I think David Essex has a Sonny. if you are asking about a relly more than about 30 years ago, it would just mean Son. Sunny R (no pun intended.

WELL!! my elder bro the first son!! was Stanley but always called BOY Or SON. it was I think a term of endearment cos it had NO hidden agenda .\He was called that till he went into the forces for his national forces call up and then he objected to it when he came home with forces palls ,and i guess it embarrassed him then.. So from family experience I would say was not short for any thing just a form of endearment for the firstborn lad

its often not so much 'short for' ,as a pet name, just a title given to a son usually, i'd have thought.
