Washing up - assuming you haven,t got a machine. My good lady washes and wipes and teaches the grand-children to do that. I teach them to wash and rinse under running water and let them dry on their own. My theory is that cloths put more germs on a dish than it takes off. happy days |

Even when you leave them to dry on there own ,they never REALLY dry, unless you are willing to wait all day.Cloths are ok as long as they are changed daily. |

A bit of both, not a problem if the tea towel is clean and dry when you start. Bugs in the air could fall on the dishes whilst they are drying on their own. Most of our stuff goes in the dishwasher. My gripe is when hubby says 'I have done the washing up for you' NO YOU HAVEN'T YOU'VE DONE IT FOR BOTH OF US, GRRRR. Ros |

All interesting. Tea-towel, even if changed daily, to me harbours germs. Now this is a joke . OK. Who wants a dishwasher - I married one. happy days |

My dad did the dishwashing when he retired. After he died my mum bought a dishwasher. I got my first dishwasher when I was pregnant with my second child. It was love at first sight! nell |

I think I must be the only 40 yr old who's dishwasher is her husband!! He sometimes uses a clean tea towel to dry up - other times just lets it dry in the drainer!! He even cleans the top of the cooker and on a Sunday he cleans the oven out too......luv him!! Much happiness Debi |

Yes - there is a risk of transferring germs from a cloth - but then there are the airborn germs that will settle on the dishes while they are left to dry anyway. If one is going to be that concerned about a few germs. lol I am more concerned about the chemicals left on the dishes etc from the washing-up liquid. It's strongly suggested that these can cause allergy problems and hyperactivity. So I always rinse. Oh - and I am too lazy to wipe dry. lol |

Use a dishwasher at home and leave to dry if on holiday. A connected thought: How many people use some sort of sponge/cloth to wash up and then use that same sponge/cloth to wipe the work surfaces? |

Read somewhere that it is not hygenic to use the hot air driers in washrooms........better if a towel is used...... Bob |

I am the dishwasher, I mostly leave them to dry. My electrical repair man has told me that dishwashers are a nice home for cockroaches. When he takes the back off for repairs there are heaps of them. Put me off having a dishwasher. There was a recent programme on TV that said we are getting too germ phobic in the kitchen and we no longer have natural resistance to some of the germs lurking. It seems a few germs can be good for us. My grandmother didn't have any of the modern aids that we have today, Her toilet was outside, she had to boil water, she was very active until the age of 90 when she had a stoke and died within the week. We never had pre-packed goods, we always had a vegie bag. Biscuits cheese and butter, sugar and tea were weighed out and put in paper. Fridges were a luxury in most homes. I don't remember all the allergies when I was a kid. Asthma was rare and we had never heard of HDD. Susan |

Ros I had to tell you all these blokes must be born with these things they say to us women built in .My husband says that to me all the time about everything ,'I did the shopping for you'and I say why don't you eat the food too and he says 'Yes but its your job' and I say sorry didn't sign on the dotted line to include all these things in my job desciption and if I would have known that it was written in stone that even though you have retired that I still have to always cook, clean, garden, shop, wash clothes, iron them, make the bed , wash up, unload dishwasher (cause that's another one he sometimes condescends to do for me) iw ould have told you where to go so I'm telling you know we share everything or I resign completely Lara |
