It would be a good idea for your sister to get the marriage certificate of Betty to Robert Hackett, that will at least give some information on him as to his status and both of their fathers names,

Marian

Marian Report 23 Mar 2015 19:19

wow you have been so good, I wouldn't have a clue where to look, but interesting if she went to America.

The death above parent were Thomas the 3rd Ashford and Hilda Ashford Dimling,so not the Ann/Betty that sailed.
Maybe they divorced and she came back?

Gritty Report 23 Mar 2015 09:10

But the Betty Hackett on the 1953 shipping list could still be correct- given that there is an Ann Stilgre listed at the address she gave.

On the manifest of inbound passengers for the same record she is listed as of German nationality (which fits which surname Freedman):

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Betty Hackett
Arrival Date: 3 Jan 1954
Ethnicity/ Nationality: German
Port of Departure: Southampton, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: America

Sorry Kay- just seen your amendment to post re Betty Ashford:

Not correct- but for reference:

OK, she wasn't living there in 1956 so could be. The birth on the shipping and death record you found still makes it possible that she gave birth in 1942- so worth exploring.

Kay- I think that's her:

68 New Cavendish Street is a shared house- bear in mind she didn't marry until 1953 so name change would not be on 1953 electoral register. These are the occupants in 1953:

Robert Brooks
Joan French
Stewart Glenn
Lionel T Grose
Lillian Jankowski
Bruno M Lanza
Elsie Samson
Richard Samson
Ann Stilgre<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Nicole Sturgeon
Bertram White
Aaron Whyman
Dianah Whyman

EDIT: Maybe not- as Ann Stilgre is still listed there in 1954 (Unless electoral register was not amended?)

Marian,

She needs to order the marriage certificate to Henry Stilgoe to get her ages, father's name and occupation.

Marian,

How did you get an age for Ann Betty and also whos the merchant tailor connected to,,,,,,,Ann L or Ann Betty,

Its assumed Ann L has had information from any adoption papers if any were drawn up.

Was Ann Betty in the ATS or similar?

Gritty Report 22 Mar 2015 16:58

In 1948 an Ann B Stilgoe is on electoral register living at 9 Linden Gardens:

Name: Ann B Stilgoe
Year: 1948
County or Borough: Kensington and Chelsea
Ward or Division/Constituency: Kensington
Street address: 9 Linden Gardens

It appears to be a shared house, and Henry Stilgoe is not with her

Gritty

Gritty Report 22 Mar 2015 16:53

In 1946 Ann B Freedman is listed on the Electoral register living at 119 Ivor Court, Gloucester Place, Westminster. Also at the same address is an Olivia S Peter.

In 1947 she has moved:
Name: Ann B Freedman
Year: 1947
County or Borough: Camden
Ward or Division/Constituency: Holborn and St Pancras
Street address: 3 Tavistock Court

In the last quarter of 1947 she marries Mr Stilgoe at St Pancras.

Gritty

Gritty Report 22 Mar 2015 16:30

Marian-

Ann B Freedman married a Henry Stilgoe in1947

She remarried in 1953 Westminster (calling herself Betty) to a Robert Hackett. We presume it's the same person as she is listed twice (once with surname Stilgoe and once with surname Freedman).

You can check these marriages here:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

and then using the volume and page numbers you can order the marriage certificates here:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Certificates cost £9.25

The marriage certificate may tell you who her father was and her address at the time- from this you may be able to find out more about her.

Not sure what information these records hold, but it may be of interest to visit the Cheshire Archives and Local Studies

I have found the Ann Stilgoe marriage then it says she married Andrew Friar??? Warrington still.
Have also found an Ann B Freedman from New York, this could be more trickier than first thought. :-S
