Hi Erika and Rose,
Received the birth certificate and then Covid 19 kicked off and I forgot to let you know.
He is Edward Llewelyn!!!!
DOB 10/5/1942.
I haven’t gone to the website you suggested yet Rose, because I forgot poor old Edward, but will look at it now and see what transpires.
Thank you both for your help.
Best wishes and good health,
Glyn

I’ve ordered his birth certificate which will hopefully shed light on all of this.
Will let you know what I find out.
Thank you both

Sorry Erika, I missed that post. It could be the same person. I’ll order his birth certificate and see if it gives his middle name as Llewelyn.
Thank you.

Any thoughts on the 2019 death I posted?

Glyn Report 27 Feb 2020 23:09

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all the input.

I’ve done some more digging. Firstly Andrew was very nice but Ernest Gale is a very distant relative and he knows very little about him.

However, his name, Ive discovered now, was Ernest Samuel and Erika the info you discovered was correct.
Ernest’s DOB 1902.

From going through the Wiltshire Times newspaper, an incident was reported there which actually appeared in the Gloucester papers and Liverpool so it caused national interest. Violet and Ernest were taken to court by the NSPCC due to what they thought was child neglect and cruelty. Edward was just under 5 years old, and the case started in October 1946 and was finally ended in July the following year, in favour of Violet and Ernest.
They were taken to court and Edward was taken away from them and put into the County Council Nursery in Warminster, about 12 miles from TROWBRIDGE where they lived.
The officer of NSPCC thought Edward was pale and withdrawn and had rather strange behaviour. Ernest and Violet used to have him sleep in their bed and he would be very restless and cry until they burnt salt on the fire, then he would settle. The court said “ they practiced witchcraft in the form of burning salt to dispel evil spirits”. Violet and Ernest said they did so because the evil spirits kept their son awake.
When Edward was taken away from them for a few months he became less withdrawn and pale, ate well and appeared to be a normal child.
The court found him to be clean, well cared for and nourished, and his parents looked after him. The conclusion was that Edwards parents were not neglecting him, and even if they had different ideas, they should be allowed to have him back. Also he was going to school soon and that would help. They were told to put Edward in his own bed and bedroom, as he had been in the children’s nursery.
The case was dismissed.

I can’t find anymore information about what happened to Edward after that. Violet as I said ended up in a mental hospital, and it appears Ernest died in 1963, but Edward would have been about 20 when his father died, so presumably he could look after himself when Violet was hospitalised.

Any comments anyone about all that information?
I was amazed it was so well reported on
Thanks for all your help.

The other person's info about Edward's parents is a long way from being accurate, so I doubt he'll be able to help much

Hoping perhaps to find 'Llewellyn' somewhere in the ancestry - no luck so far

GALE, ERNEST SAMUEL KNOTT
GRO Reference: 1902 J Quarter in MELKSHAM Volume 05A Page 113

WESTON, VIOLET MARIA WITHEY
GRO Reference: 1907 D Quarter in MERTHYR TYDFIL Volume 11A Page 833

BUT..........as the mother was born in Wales, perhaps that's the connection?

GALE, EDWARD LLEWLLYN 1942
GRO Reference: DOR Q2/2019 in Bristol (301-1B) Entry Number 519041683

BUT....until you get facts about his second forename (from his birth cert), you - and everyone else - will continue guessing

I’ve also contacted Andrew to find out if our relatives are the same person. Thanks Rose

Glyn Report 22 Feb 2020 09:05

Thank you everyone that’s amazing. It explains why he didn’t visit Violet in hospital, and my parents took over the responsibilities instead.
I think I’ve drawn a blank with Edward because, as you’ve said, he may still be alive, and if he was adopted he may have another name, or if he went into a home, he probably wouldn’t vote.
Brilliant detective work, and especially finding Ernest’s death.
Great team work as always
:-D

Glyn,

You said he was Ernest Francis and died in 1980, but this can't be Violet's husband:

Ernest Francis was born in 1909 but Ernest Samuel was 1902. This fits with the 1939 register.

On Electoral Rolls, there's one Edward L Gale in Liverpool in 2002, and lots of Edward Gales with no middle initial given, in other places.
Impossible to know if any of them might be your Edward.
Also, he may have opted out of the public ER - or been opted out, if someone has a welfare power of attorney.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 20 Feb 2020 10:49

Bear in mind that Edward may very well still be alive.

If so, and if he never married, there will be no record of him online , other than his birth.

ArgyllGran Report 20 Feb 2020 10:47

I don't see an Andrew either, with any of those names in Search Members' Trees.

Leslie E Gale isn't the right person.
A Leslie Ernest Gale was born in Wiltshire on 27 Feb 1930, and is on 1939 Register in Warminster.
He died in Somerset in 2001.
