Hi BarlieGordon

Glad you found the info useful

Don't worry about 'taking over' the thread from Andrea - she obviously isn't interested.

BarlieGordon Report 2 May 2020 22:31

I have found myself in lock down and decided to go over the family tree to keep the mind active. Strangely I had the same problem with the same people. One of the main characters was born and never died and another one was never born and died, how can that be? Well it was called The First World War!!

In 1878 James Walter Frank GASKIN was born to James Walter Gaskin and Kate Dolding in the Kent village of Marden. By 1901 going by the name of Frank Gaskin he had moved up to London and was working in a pub. In 1911 he was a clerk working or living in the accommodation of the Salvation Army in Spitalfield London.

On the 4th August 1914 war was declared against Germany, Kitchener asked for 100,000 volunteers to make up a New Army (K1) to go and fight. James attested into the army on the 10th August in London and it is also the day he ceased to exist. James went into the recruiting hall as JWF GASKIN aged 36 and came out as Private (G/40) James W.F. GORDON aged 29 Years 209 days of the 11th (Service) Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment.

To be in Kitchener's 1st Army and to serve abroad you had to be between the age of 19 yrs and 30 yrs. I am not going to surmise why the subterfuge other than he was too old on entry. One bit of good news that helped piece this together was that he had put his father as his next of kin on his attestation paper's

James Walter GASKIN The Beeches, Marden. Kent

I do know that his father did question why he the Army were calling him Gordon and that his name was in fact Gaskin and their reply was

He joined as GORDON, he served as GORDON and he left as GORDON!!!

Martha R Weston met and married James while he was recovering from gunshot wounds in the Third Southern General Hospital Oxford. He had been there since October 1917 and they married 9th January 1919

Martha was in fact born in Toungoo, Burma 23rd September 1891 to Private OX/507 George Weston of the Oxfordshire Light Infantry and Eliza Moon. Unfortunately Eliza died in Ferozepore India 28th December 1897 and George returned to Cowley Barracks by 1901. Of his two surviving children, Martha went to stay with an Uncle Jonathan and his family out at Ewelme and Clara was a border at Headington Hall School of Domestic Service.

Of George Weston, he remarried Jane MacIntyre in 1903 and he was indeed a carpenter until he became a coal merchant in1908/9 and they had one son Archibald John.

I don't want to take over this thread from unknown, but may I congratulate you on the marvellous Job you have done of unravelling the Gordon / Weston part of my family tree. Most of the information confirms my reserch.

In a few short days you have gleaned more than I did from my father in several years. Thank you ArgyllGran and ErikaH.

Probably Jeannie's birth, assuming Rothesay is correct:

MCINTYRE

Maybe, in view of father's name Archibald ??

Jane Mcintyre

Re Middlesex Regiment:

"The 1st and 2nd battalions both saw turns in India during the late 19th century."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middlesex_Regiment#Early_service

Good finds, Erika.
So George returned from India after Eliza's death, and was in Oxford Cowley Barracks in 1901.
As a widower, he is entitled to call himself single.
(I seem to remember reading somewhere that private soldiers weren't supposed to be married, and therefore are all listed as single. Might be an old wives' tale.)

The son Archibald in 1911 census:

WESTON, ARCHIBALD JOHN mms MACINTYRE
GRO Reference: 1904 D Quarter in OF HEADINGTON Volume 03A Page 1022

Harriet was born in Rothesay, per 1911 census. I don't see her birth there.

EDIT:

Actually , on closer inspection of 1911, her name is Jeannie, mistranscribed as Harriett.

So this is the marriage:

Marriages Sep 1903 (>99%)
MCINTYRE Jane Headington 3a 1966
Weston George Headington 3a 1966

He's a coal dealer, which would fit with Clara's stated father, coal merchant
But not with Martha's father stated to be a carpenter in 1919.

Can't see how this man could be the father of Martha or Clara - unless he'd been in Burma/India and had fathered them there, while unmarried.
Then returned to England and become either a carpenter or a coal dealer ???

I think this is his army record -

James Walter Frederick Gordon
in the British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920
Name: James Walter Frederick Gordon
Gender: Male
Birth Place: Wallingford, Berkshire
Enlistment Age: 29
Regimental Number: 40
Regiment Name: Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex) Regiment, Football Battalion
Number of Images: 25
Form Title: Short Service Attestation
Family Members:
Name Relation to Soldier
James Walter Frederick Gordon

Discharged 19/9/19 because of wounds.

He was sent a King's Certificate on discharge, and he signed the receipt Frank Gordon.
His address was c/o Mrs Weston, Salyate (?) Road, Cowley, Oxford

He was also sent a War Badge and Certificate. His address on the receipt was
c/o Mr G F Weston, Salegate Lane, Temple Cowley, Oxford.

He's described as honest and hardworking.

Per the marriage banns, Martha's father's name is George Fulham Weston, carpenter.
Her address at marriage is Salegate Lane, Cowley.

Martha's another mystery - I don't see her birth, nor in censuses, nor her father in censuses.

The only other mention of a man of that name is here:

Clara Beatrice Weston
in the Somerset, England, Marriage Registers, Bonds and Allegations, 1754-1914
Name: Clara Beatrice Weston
Gender: Female
Age: 24
Birth Year: abt 1890
Marriage or Bann Date: 30 Jun 1914
Marriage Place: Cloford, Somerset, England
Parish as it Appears: Cloford
Father: George Fulham Weston <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Spouse: Albert Frank Lapham

But that George is a coal merchant.
And then I can't see a birth or censuses for Clara! (Apart from 1939 which gives her DOB as 2 Dec 1890)
