Hello Cherilyn,
Thank you for the offer.
Could you please look to see any information on an Eliza Carbis who died in Hamilton Victoria in 1902. She was born in England (maybe Cornwall) about 1830.
Probably went out to Aus between 1850ish to 1869.
Immigration as well as death info or family or address - anything.
Kind regards, Carole

Carole Mac Report 18 Jan 2010 22:22

Hello again Cherilyn,
Thank you for trying re Eliza Carbis. Yes, I had a thread on a few days ago.
From the beginning:
I have a Jane Lavin (nee Carbis) who died in NZ in 1869. A newspaper article on her death mentioned she had a sister in Ballarat Australia. I have been trying to find some link between my Jane and another "Carbis" to ascertain Jane's ancestry.
I looked on Ancestry and found a family tree with an Eliza Carbis who died in Victoria Australia, so I put a thread on GR for someone to give me what other info was on that family tree record. The info came back from Glitter Baby as Eliza Carbis born 1829 Redruth, Parents William & Ann, died 17 March 1902 Hamilton Victoria Australia. No spouse or children listed. Then SomersetGirl & Derek found more of that family information incl a sister called Jane.
I also have been given (and sorry I can't find on which thread) the families of the Eliza Carbis you mentioned, but she supposedly died in Sydney (and had different parents). Also several other 'nee Carbis' families and a 'married into Carbis' family.
As I can't find a marriage in any country (UK, Aus, NZ) for Jane Carbis and John Lavin and therefore not able to get a cert with info, I am searching any possible links I can think of to get to the background of my Jane Carbis.
Sorry about the long reply but thought I needed to explain where I am coming from and where I want to get to.
Many many thanks for your help so far.
Kind regards,
Carole

Hi PigletsPal

Do you know Josiah's parents names or an approx age in 1911?

There was a Josiah Paxton COSTA b. 1858 who arrived in Sydney in 1909 from London. He travelled alone.

Now, how's this - he was charged in Oct 1910, May 1911 AND Jan 1912 with using the title of dentist although not deemed qualified or registered under the Act! He had a practice in George St Sydney called 'London Dental Surgery'. (!) He claimed to be a registered dentist in the UK, later stating that he had paid his guinea for registration in Victoria, but was refused.

But I can't find him in NSW after that. I wonder if he returned to the UK?

The Sydney Morning Herald
Friday 16 September 1910
THE CASE OF THE LATE LEADING PORTER ALLEN.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD.
Sir,-You were good enough to give publicity in your columns, on the 7th inst, to a letter I sent you, in which I appealed to your readers to support me in raising a testimonial fund on behalf of the heroic conduct of Porter Allen, who risked his life on the railway line in a successful effort to save that of a child, sustaining thereby internal injuries as well as the loss of a limb. Since then this humble yet noble hero has succumbed to his injuries, leaving his wife and children unprovided for. We know that no money can compensate a woman for the loss of her husband-in truth there Is no compensation. But, still, it would help to soften the blow which has so suddenly crushed her life, and deprived the children of a father's care, if the public action which has rendered her helpless and dependent and the children orphans, were fittingly recognised. May I therefore venture to suggest the subscriptions which have been donated be handed to the widow, and perhaps the further publicity which I am earnestly hoping you may give to this letter may appeal to one, or mayhap more than one, of the affluent bereaved.
Hopeless poverty and bereavement are sad bedfellows.
I am, etc.,
J. PAXTON COSTA.

How ironic he should speak of a wife's loss of a husband and children's loss of a father!

He also wrote rather dramatic letters regarding the ANZACS (1916) and the Labour party (1912)!

Marriages Sep 1888 (>99%)

COSTA Josiah Paxton Clutton 5c 887
THOMPSON Laura Emmeline Clutton 5c 887

Their full certificate details are online at http://kilmersdon-radstock.org.uk/radsom/mar-f/id3.htm

There is also a tree online if you google his name but I can't seem to get it to open. States daughter Edith was born in Scotland but all else seems to match.

In 1881 Census Josiah P COSTA was a dentists assistant, aged 21, son of Frederick (who was a dentist).

The family are all together in Tottenham in 1901: Josiah (44), Laura (39) and children Kenelin [?] Paxton (13), Laura Ursula Paxton (11), Russell Frederick (8) - not sure where Edith Christine Paxton b. 1894 is though. All born Croydon district.

Looking at the CARBIS women who had children in Ballarat prior to 1869, there are 2 other options.

Christianna CARBIS & Francis GRAY had chn in Ballarat 1855-61 (John , Hy & Christianna).

Susan CARBIS m. Jno Adrian THORNHILL and had 5 chn in Ballarat 1858-1875. Susan was born in Cornwall. (She did not actually marry John until 1873.)

I can't find their deaths in Victoria though sorry :-(

Hello Cherilyn

Would you be able to look in your records for the death record for
Harriet Elizabeth REED need Disney (Parents: William and Mary Ann) and her husband Thomas REED (parents names unknown). Lived in Footscray area.

And also the deaths of Thomas KELSEY and Ellen (Helen) Getfield (Gadfield), they married in 1863 and their children I think are: Ada, Charles, Herbert, Walter and Joseph.

And if not too much trouble 1 more: I am hoping to find out the parents of Margaret Kathleen BORBIDGE (nee Smith) who died in 1973 in VIC (born 1887 VIC).

Many many thanks

Cherilyn Report 20 Jan 2010 02:01

Hi Colleen

Here is their marriage notice, in case it adds anything:

The Argus, Monday 23 April 1860
On the 4th inst., at their residence, 2 Faraday-street, Carlton, by the Rev. W. L. Binks, Henry Hudspith, late of Felton, Cumberland, to Merinda, eldest daughter of Charles Fear, of Green Heys, Manchester.

H HUDSPETH arrived in Victoria in Mar 1853 aged 28 aboard Sporting Lass from UK.
Merinda FEAR arrived in Apr 1857 aged 25 aboard Sabrina from UK.
Both appear to have travelled alone.

She is shown on 3 out of 4 births as Marinda, not Merinda.

There is reference to a Henry HUDSPETH regarding an application for 180 acres of land at Wannaene in Sept 1870. (It was recommended by the Board). This is near Dromana so fits with Alice's birth there in 1871.

I can't see them leaving Victoria but can't find their deaths, nor marriages for the chn.

Sorry
:-(

PS Bull is most likley an abbrev for Bulla.

Good afternoon Cherilyn, Carole again.
I have been given a copy of the 1841 census for a Carbis family in Madron Cornwall from someone on Ancestry. They also mentioned the parents in the family were Richard Carbis who married an Ann Stephens.
My Jane Carbis had a middle name 'Stephens'! Now I am getting hopeful!!!!
In the family list was a Susan, so I was wondering if you can dig up any more info on the Susan Carbis you had who married John Thornhill please.
I might be going down the wrong track again but think it is worth a try to expand on the connection. I hope I can get as excited as the one above!
Thanks very much
best wishes
