here's another Hot match for a Taylor ........

James Taylor 1833 Edinburgh. Leith or Fife

James Taylor 1833 Hardrow, Yorkshire

I know Yorkshire is in the north of England, but it is not as far north as Scotland!

BTW ..........

Anyone want to take any Taylors?????

Most of my suggested single HMs are for these danged Yorkshire Taylors!

although Mary Smith comes a close second!

Well there you go Sylvia, your examples show that they aren't matching year and place of birth...

I think GR really really need to look at this again, rather than giving reasons which on the surface sound fine but do not provide any substance once you start to look at them!

Maybe I'll ask everyone to PM me with a couple of examples of where years and places of birth are no way the same and I'll pop them back into the one response to GR....

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Jan 2012 05:01

I have 11 pages of Hot Matches, all with 1 NEW record ...... date of arrival unknown, as GR doesn't tell you that

I think all of them are along this same line

Edward Taylor 1792 Bottisham Cambs

Edward Taylor 1792 Hardrow, Yorkshire

Hardly matching place of birth ...... although I grant, they are both in England :-D

Sorry

I do NOT understand

the GR response said:-

" ....... A couple of months ago we reased a new hotmatch system which matches year of birth and place of birth to ensure members got more accurate matches.

Prior to this we only matches names and years of birth. "

so they match year of birth and place of birth???

still does not explain the match of Loma Loma Fiji with England that you got, nor the ones that I've had!

another lame excuse, methinks!

re:-

"Surely you need to have some names in your tree before you get any HotMatches?"

I think this comment by IGP is getting at jax .............. who has been known to say that she has removed her tree from this site! I think one of her reasons was her disgust with HMs!

Not very nice of him to do that, though! :-|

Hi all,

Well I received the following response confirming that the HOT MATCH system now only matches year and place of birth.

Thanks for getting in touch. A couple of months ago we reased a new hotmatch system which matches year of birth and place of birth to ensure members got more accurate matches.

Prior to this we only matches names and years of birth.

Regarding the exampls you forwarded to us which gave a completely incorrect match, the reason for this is that the member has updated their tree since we collated and sent out the matches to you.

I am sorry for the inconvenience. I hope this helps.

Kind Regards,

Genes Reunited Support Team

IGP I don't understand your comment "Surely you need to have some names in your tree before you get any HotMatches?"

I do have a reasonable size tree on here ....

Of course this explaination must mean that anyone whose surname starts with anything other than an A or a B will result in me not getting a match :-(

Mind you it would seem that GR's explaination is a bit odd...why would someone change a place of birth from Loma Loma Fiji to England.....just doesn't seem likely that you'd randomly select Loma Loma in Fiji does it...

One of the problems with designing a matching program such as HotMatches is that if one or other of the trees containing matches is modified or worse still reloaded at any point after the hotmatch was generated it is likely to appear as a mismatch.

It is possible for this to be corrected by a subsequent matching run but until then it may appear to be incorrect.

I have always realised that GR don't match place of birth, but I I haven't bothered with hot matches since I had Jane Davenport matched with Tobias Wilkinson, Jane Davenport matched with Edward Hardman - the list goes on :-S

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 10 Jan 2012 15:53

The one that I posted earlier had a 30 year difference in year of birth, 1829 and 1859, as well as completely different place of birth.

Joy

Joy Report 10 Jan 2012 12:55

One would think that the year would match in

Cecil Bell, Born 1903

The hot match sent:

Cecil Bell, born 1910

:-)

Surely you need to have some names in your tree before you get any HotMatches?

Anyway I digress.

POB was apparently added towards the end of 2010 but it appears that there were some performance issues which has meant in practice that the process has not worked as it should for over a year. Estelle's comment reinforces the belief that POG matching is currently on ice whilst these performance issues are addressed.

In the meantime something must be happening as I have currently over 9 pages worth of HM's updated, albeit on a sporadic basis, since I last refreshed my tree on here last year

No further response received as yet to my reply of yesterday:

Thanks Lisa for your reply.

Just a couple of queries - Estelle advised that you were already trialling a new hot match system, however your response indicates that this is still in the planning stage. Can you confirm which one is correct?

I've been a member for a long time so I know how to search for matches etc, what I was concerned about was that the system appeared to only be selecting a match with a name, as per the example I gave you, 1903 and 1910 are not the same birth years.

Can you please comment on this as you didn't refer to it at all in your response.

I look forward to your response.

Waiting, waiting.....so it appears they are matching my name only......why then aren't I getting lots of matches with very common names such as William Smith!

Will advise when GR respond....
