I rather like the new tree and think it has possibilities but even Phil has admitted there are still problems with it.

Unfortunately, there seems to be is a right way and a wrong way of doing things. :-(

For me, I find that I can only use Mozilla Firefox to enter new data. There do seem to be many more problems with Internet Explorer Version 8 which is my "default" browser. I cannot use IE9 as my OS is Windows XP

The latest problems I have experienced - and have submitted feedback on - are as follows
Add Individual.
When adding an individual, coplete the Quick form but do not Save.
Go straight to Add More details to add a Birthplace etc. Then Save.
I have found that if one saves early and then go to edit then I get an additional entry on my chart.

I added 3 individuals yesterday and then went to edit two others.
When I highlighted the Individual to edit opened the Details Pane, the information shown was for the last person I had "added"
Closed Pane and went back via Edit, Edit more details. This seemed to have worked and I edited the relevant details and Saved.
However.
When I checked later on, the details that I had edited had dissappeared and I had to resort to the old Tree to put the edits in.

The success of any software depends on its ease of use. In the case of the new tree I find this sadly lacking.

There are a few "cosmetic" issues that I think could be better.
The "slider" may look pretty but is a time waster.
The italic print in the Details Pane is difficult to read.
The Date style is not consistant with my chosen one. All my chart uses the format DD MMM YYYY. - or if before 1752 then DD MMM YYYY/YY
I chose that style 3 years ago as that most easily readable and is consistant with the style used in my local computer programme for use with an exported GEDCOM.
There is no incentive to add profile photos They are now well hidden.
Matches require you to click on an entry to discover whether they match trees or records. I would far prefer that just tree matches are shown.

So all in all, not a good start but if at first you don't succeed .......
I am afraid is is testing my patience though..... :-S

That "feels" like Genes have been updating the system. I had problems when I submitted my earlier post and got the dreaded error so hit the Back button and tried again. Error again.
Closed down and tried to get back in: Request to enter Password etc.
When I did get back in I discovered a double post!

Cynthia,

I may not be a frequent poster on the boards but I am not a new user of GR... I tend to only post on the boards when there is something like this new tree which effects us all.

I understand that Simon, it's just that I spend a lot of time advising new folk how to return to their thread, so I wondered if there could possibly be a connection - in a roundabout way.

So many folk don't read the guidelines before they start using the site so it could be that some haven't looked at the advice given re the tree.

My main mistake in the beginning was not realising that the Save button was so far down the page and then wondering why people weren't being saved. doh :-S

Surely Cynthia you are not suggesting that I had forgotten to SAVE my changes??

I assure you that was NOT the case.

I only included the bare facts in my post above but there was much more to it spread over 2 different sessions on the evening of the 15th and morning of the 16th as I wanted to be sure before I reported the problem

I have added about 30 people to my chart since the new tree became available in December and have submitted much feedback over the last few weeks. This latest appears to be a new problem not previously observed..

Hi everyone.....what a disaster, this new 'Tree' ! i have been very happy for last 7 yrs until now.

How do i go back to the 'Old Tree'!

The same has happened to me, i added a 2nd partner, came up twice, re-did that & added a child came up twice, managed to rid one...but....when i went back to that Family, the 2nd husband shows up as the 1st. husband's place, so decided to leave it & not game enough to add anything else...haven't got the time to spend re-doing all this, so time consuming.

There are other problems as well i have encountered.

I have twice sent my opinions in the Fedback Box.

No Jeremy, I was saying that I, me, myself, forgot to save people because I didn't see the Save button and just wondered if others may have done the same.

I have added and deleted people this week with no problem. I need to try adding some photos now to see how I get on.

According to their FB page, the problems re logging on yesterday were caused by their database getting 'a bit stuck' but that the problem had been fixed. :-S

Hopefully this is the right place for my whinge. Since the introduction of the new tree format I can no longer find a vast amount of information I saved (attached to a relation) previously. On the old tree it was saved to the Gallery and readily available. Whether this was the right place to save information I'm not sure but it was handy and worked for me.

I use the old tree but how long this will be available I don't know. At present my plan is to download as much information as I have gathered so far with a view to exiting this site when my next subscription is due. If the new tree starts working for me before then I'll probably stay.

Regards all, George Rollinson

Hello Amy,

When you click on Family Tree, you should have the option of using the old tree.

To Cynthia (and others)

I was new to the boards, but certainly not new to GR, and I have a good understanding of computers and their systems as I work on them all day!

So I'm sure, in my case at least, that 'user error' is not the issue here, and surely you must see that with so many similar problems for so many users that it is the system that is at fault.

Just to add to that, I was using the old system early this morning and tried to continue this afternoon after returning home, but I now can't get either system to load... most frustrating.

A request from Genes asking your opinion? Geez, they just have to read these boards.

I don't think I'll get a request........... even if it is random. ROFL!!

I would be one of the many who aren't computer savvy, but this new format is horrible. I am considering not renewing my membership as the frustration is too much. When I get into GR my whole sytem is slowed, I had lost information to family that I know I had earlier put on my tree and the list goes on.

Alan

I too have to think as to whether I will renew my membership due to the changes. :-(

I removed my tree from this site a couple of days ago. Such a relief.

Whilst reading this I had a 'light bulb' moment.

Genes have introduced a new tree format, but kept the old format running.
Surely this must be the cause of all the problems. This would go someways to explaining the double entries on the new tree.

Genes now need to bite the bullet and get rid of either the old tree and then provide a small 'masterclass' in the help section to assist those experiencing problems OR get rid of the new format until such time as they are sure it works effectively.

At present members have the choice of old or new neither of which actually works. How ridiculous is that?

No other business would be allowed to get away with charging for a service which does not work.

Surely under the Trade Descriptions Act, Genes Reunited could be prosecuted for providing a service which is not fit for purpose.
