And they say variety is the spice of life :-D

May be some of us have overindulged on variety ;-) and now we are fed up with it :-0

I goes bit like this......... (dates by way of example so don't take them as actuals.....!

In 2003 GR was launched. Whilst it ran on Oil Lamps many people got used to it even though it was a bit basic.

In 2006, GR decided to upgrade to Candles. This went down rather badly with the hardened Oil Lamp users who couldn't see why there needed to be changes. It wasn't broke so why fix it.

On the other hand those who had never used Oil Lamps and those who thought them to be old hat couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

In 2009, GR decided to upgrade to Gas Light. This went down rather badly with the Candle users who couldn't see why there needed to be changes. It wasn't broke so why fix it.

There was a small group who insisted on going back to Candle power, despite the fact that it attracted so much criticism when introduced only three years previously. And again, those who had never used Candles and those who thought them to be old hat couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

In 2012, GR decided to upgrade to Electric Light. This went down rather badly with certain Gas Lamp users who couldn't see why there needed to be changes. It wasn't broke so why fix it. etcetera, etcetera,

There was yet again, those users who insisted on going back to Gas Lights, despite the fact that it had attracted so much criticism when introduced only three years previously.

On the other hand those who had never used Gas Lamps and those who thought them to be old hat couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

In 20??....!

I've been a member since 2005.

No problems with the updates, until the latest one :-)

I'm fairly computer literate.

I don't object to change. But I get annoyed when new things don't work!!!

I get VERY annoyed when the people who "force" something new on us don't answer our questions or listen to us!!!

The Team are going to get a message as the number of post by members has disappeared since this morning

Rambling

Rambling Report 9 Aug 2012 15:28

Glitterbaby, hover over the avatar, your post count is still there

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 9 Aug 2012 15:31

Yes but it did show without having to do that - also the send message is "hiding"

So why has it changed since this morning ?

Rambling

Rambling Report 9 Aug 2012 15:40

"Also on the boards, we have compressed the profile details. When you hover over the image, the details will appear and you can click on the send message button. The reason for this change is to compress the post section on the thread view, and reduce the unnecessary white space. " Phil Moir

Typical

It is mentioned on Annoucements Board - but it is not flagged as a new one.

Only check that board when it shows a new posting

Nice idea but I sent them an email a week ago and no response, not even an acknowledgement!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 14 Aug 2012 19:45

Malcolm

send it again, and this time DEMAND a reply!!

although Estelle posted somewhere that there may be no replies to emails because they are so busy trying to get things right that they just do not have time.

SylviaInCanada Report 14 Aug 2012 20:03

I have spent the last 8 or 9 days working with th site .............. at least, on the Boards, as I do not use my tree and so cannot comment from my own experience on problems with that aspect of the site. I KNOW there are problems with the tree, but cannot speak to them..

I have put together about half a dozen things that do not seem to be working to the benefit of members

............ so I will be emailing GR later today.

What I have noticed is the following ....................

1. There has been a slight change in the background colour, but it still seems too bright. I still end up squinting.

Plus, the contrast between the background colour, text and font colour, and subject colour (eg, name of poster, title of thread) is either too strong or not strong enough!

2. Since the compression of the profile details .......... it is very difficult to separate text in the box from information in Researching.

I have taken to adding an extra 2 or 3 blank lines to the text in my posts ...... which rather defeats the purpose.

3. Has anyone else noticed the confusion between the Preview and Submit buttons for threads, and Send and Draft tabs for Messages?

On threads, Preview is white lettering in a dark turquoise tab to the left, and Submit is turquoise lettering on a much lighter background.

End result ...... Preview stands out, and Submit sinks into the background.

In New Messages ........... Send is in white lettering on a dark turquoise background to the left, and Draft is in turquoise lettering on a much lighter background to the right.

In this case ............... Send stands out, and Draft sinks into the background.

Why are the two positive actions (Send and Submit) not equally treated ...... and standing out?

4. Advanced Search .......... it is only possible to use the Advanced Search one Board at a time. That is fine IF you know which Board the post or thread is on. Otherwise, you have to selectively go through the Boards one by one. Total waste of time.

There used to be a Search All Boards option ................ why was it removed?

5.Still a problem with slow submitting of posts ............. which is leading to duplicate posts as people hit Submit again and again.

6. My Threads ....... still acts up at time, so the problem of not being to open that Board still remains.

7. Home Page is still cluttered and messy ............. and not very attractive.

EDIT:- to add .....................

8. The notification that there is a NEW posting on Announcements has disappeared since August 1.

That means people are missing new announcements from GR ........ and members are having to post such announcements on other boards.

Any comments from anyone????

That's pretty well it Sylvia, I agree on all the points you have made. I still have to use 125% zoom and lose the text of the screen one side or the other ( which I didn't need to do before so the text must be either smaller or perhaps finer).

I'd also love to know from anyone ( I've asked before but got no answer) what colour the text is directly beneath 'quick search' and can anyone else see it without having to highlight it first? :-D

Thanks xx

do you mean when you click on Quick Search?

The heading is dark green background, with white lettering Community Quick Search

Then a turquoise box with black or very dark green lettering

The search box is dark beige

and the Submit tab is dark green with white lettering (like the heading)

I did not have to highlight anything.

Sylvia, Before you click on 'Quick search' to the left of this
in white on a deep turquoise background, can you see the words under it ie "single word search"?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 14 Aug 2012 20:54

Rose

I cannot see that at all

Actually, in Tools ......................... Quick Search is in turquoise lettering on the whitish background, and there are no words underneath it

I get the deep turquoise background when I click on Quick Search and open it for use.

and then I see this .................

Community Quick Search

This search has been designed to search for single words or hyphenated words only. (e.g. "Norfolk" or "Bishops-Stortford"). It does not allow the use of special characters or spaces.

If you would like to search for a whole phrase or sentence, please use our Advanced Search.

lol well maybe it is different on mine :-S

'quick search' is in the tools section as you say...but above that is 'Quick search ' box with 'enter keyword' in black text on white
( with 'search' below) ...but just between that white box and the large lettered 'Quick Search" it says 'single word search ' in a very drab olive colour which I can't really see unless I highlight it when it appears as white.

Lordy

I've just seen what you mean!!

I've been skipping right over that one!

Do you know, it doesn't show when you go to the Community Boards page, which I was doing via another "window" .... so that I could look and post here what I was seeing.

It only shows when you are actually on a Board or a thread.

I can just make out the words "Single Word Search" ........ but very difficult!
