Hi Ingrid, thanks for the info. However as my knowledge of how Australian official documents show names, can you please clarify the official entry for me in terms of surnames and give names of the people involved. The problem I have is that I have not been able to contact any of Wallace Henshall's relatives in the UK and none of my family are aware of any divorce from my Aunt Maude after he returned to Australia after the war. Thanks for your help, Geoff

Hi Patricia, first of all a thousand apologies for calling you Anna - I don't know what I was thinking about. Thanks for the information, I will check on Alfred but Richard does not appear in any of my records so will make a note just in case he pops up in the future. Geoff

Hi ***alviegal*** Yes I am receiving a great deal of useful information but most of it will have to wait to be sorted until I am back in the UK from holiday next week. Your latest missive with the census returns has highlighted my inexperience in family research as you report a different Henshall family to the one I have - even though mine are also from Alderley Edge. In my 1911 census there is no mention of the Alfred who appears in yours (amongst other variations). However I am learning not to take things at face value which is part of the learning curve. I am looking forward to sorting all the very helpful replies when I get back to my home computer next week and am very grateful for all the help I have received so far. Geoff

What a lot of great information you've received Geoff! I think this is the Alfred who went to Oz at the same time.

Hi Geoff,
I checked the Ryerson Index and Wallace actually died in the Concord Repatriation and General Hospital on 10/12/1958, late of Lawson aged 63 yrs. This was the main hospital for veterans in NSW. Lawson is up in the Blue Mountains, so he was a couple of hours from home; not being treated locally (listed Sydney Morning Herald 11/12/1958).
Cheers

Hi Tony, Thanks for the info. The last time I saw 'home duties' on an electoral roll was a husband who had put it down as his wife's occupation - but as you cannot see a marriage maybe she just lived with him and changed her name because he couldn't get married!!! Thanks for all your help. Regards, Geoff

Thanks Tony, the Australian Govt is very efficient with its digitisation and I have already found Wallace's military record. I shall order a copy of his death certificate to see what is on it - there has been no mention by anyone of a divorce from my Aunt, the general comment is that he just 'disappeared'. I see from his record that he went AWOL at the date of his marriage. I shall have to look at his son's Royal Navy record to find out when the son was born to see whether Wallace decided to "do the right thing" by my Aunt (they lived fairly close together). Geoff

Hi Geoff, Alfred Henshall returned to London arriving 29/3/1913 on the ship Orvieto. His age was then 31yrs and was noted as a labourer. There was a Richard Henshall arriving in NSW in 1913. Don't know if he is one of yours. Regards, Patricia.

Hi Geoff.
If you copy/paste this link, hopefully it will take you straight to his record.
You can view a Digital copy of his service records on-line or request a copy
See: View digital copy ( record ) Request copy ...Top right hand side
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx
Search as a Guest: ....Type into box ( Keywords ) WALLACE HENSHALL Afte leaving Australia he appears to have disembarked at Plymouth Nov 1916 His marriage to Maude BAILEY ( 22nd July 1918 ) in the U.K is also recorded here.( page 7 of 28 pages )
Fate: Meant he returned to Australia after his service and not killed, or held as a P.O.W
Yes, his death cert should hold his marital status and any children, ( deceased and living )and any other marriages he may have had. Also his last address. Under normal circumstances ( pending of imformant ) Death certs in Australia hold quite a bit of detail. Tony

Hi Tony, thanks a lot. This certainly fills in a lot of the gaps as well as posing more questions (which I hope you can help with). What department in Canberra N.S.W. I should contact about his military record? What does the word Fate (in Fate Returned...) mean. Would his death certificate indicate his marital status? If I can get in touch with his family I may be able to find out what happened between his return to UK in 1916 and arriving back in Australia in 1918 apart from getting married and having a son. Also why there appears to have been no contact between him and my aunt in the intervening years (such is the joy of researching family history). I shall contact the N.S.W. Registry Office to see about a copy of the death certificate. Thanks for your help. Geoff

Thank you ***alviegal*** the first two items are the same as I have found, but the migration to Australia is new. I wonder who the 30 year old Alfred Henshall is as he is not an immediate relative but could of course be an uncle - age 15 seems a very young age to be emigrating but at least now I can start searching for when he returned. I am presuming he enlisted into the Australian Army and this is where the Australian Contingent comes from - hopefully someone can point me in the right direction to find information about this body. So far I have not been able to make contact with Wallace's immediate family but I will keep trying. Thanks for your help, Geoff Bailey
