Hi,

Does anyone know if I can get Derbyshire Parish Records online or does anyone have access to them.

I have found what I believe is a relative of mine Henry Clayton Baptism 26 Dec 1824 at Stanton By Bridge, Derby. His father is Joseph Clayton and his mother Patience.

That is all the information that is available where I got that from but I was wondering if I looked at the parish records if it would give an occupation for the father.

I have previously tried to find information on here and some of you have helped me but I think I may have deleted the thread from my list as it was some while ago.

Thank you in advance.

AOGG

that is the birth I found but am not sure it is the same one on the 1881 census as I know he wasn't in Derbyshire then and was not going under the name Henry then either, which is why I wanted more info is possible about the Baptism and I wish I could find my original thread. I believe Clayton was fairly common in Derbyshire.

For anyone that helped before, sorry I should have put in the original post, by 1861 he was going under the name of Major Clayton and which I think had been mistranscribed on an earlier census.

MC just going to check the url out now.

Thank you both.

That is the right family Major has been really difficult to find because I didn't really know his name, in 1851 he was down as Mary and male but I recently found what I believe to be his mothers birth and her fathers name Henry so the birth in Derbyshire looks very likely as I thought all the names matching was too much of a coincidence, also he says on several records he was born in Derbyshire.

I would imagine that would be the same one but a lot of the time I don't even know if they knew where they were born, most of his siblings I have found and they were born Warwickshire.

I have his parents and some siblings in 1851, not him and then I have more of them in together in a tent in Worcestershire in 1861 he is on there as Mary a son and he is 44.

The Derbyshire one had a lot of matches which is why I wanted to know if there was further information available, I believe his mother Patience was a Hewitt before her marriage and her father was called Henry.

Sorry about the wait for the reply I was trying to find Henry/Major marriage and on the census too.

That is looking very likely for the 1851 and 1871. 1871 is definite because he stays there or within 5 miles until his death.

I have him in 1861 with his parents.

This is what confuses me when I am doing research you are sure you have the right family but things don't add up.

I have Henry/Major in 1881 aged 62 Tinker living Shenstone but
his wife Eliza is 42 so the age gap in 10 years has doubled and the total children they have are 9 the eldest 3 on the 1871 are not at home but 3 younger ones have appeared.

Think I need to take a trip to my local records office to see if I can find baptism records for his children.

No the above Henry I posted is not the same one,as I have found him in 1871 and clearly not Major.

Back to the drawing board.

Many thanks Meercat that would certainly fit with everything I have found so far to them being Gypsy/travellers which is why I had so much difficulty in finding information easily.

I know I will never be able to prove 100% but I think that it most definitely is the person I have been looking for and another piece in the puzzle.
