Oh!! That rules that one out then. Thank you.

Maybe he wasn't registered, although strange that all the others were baptised, and not Lewis. I am beginning to wonder if he had a differant Mother.

I did search on GRO myself using MMN Thomas, with a birth year 2 years either side and the only one I found was the one I mentioned above.

John Jones had died before 1877, but there are so many John Joneses that it's impossible to know when he died.

There's this child:

Isaac Jones
from Wales Births and Baptisms
Name Isaac Jones
Gender Male
Christening Date 26 Aug 1843
Christening Place LLANCYNFELYN,CARDIGAN,WALES
Father's Name John Jones
Mother's Name Elizabeth

Probably this birth:

JONES, ISAAC mms THOMAS
GRO Reference: 1843 S Quarter in ABERYSTWYTH Volume 27 Page 16

Ah! Here they are in 1851:

Isaac Jones
in the 1851 Wales Census
Name: Isaac Jones
Age: 7
Estimated birth year: abt 1844
Relation: Son
Father's name: John Jones
Mother's name: Elizabeth Jones
Gender: Male
Where born: Llancynfelyn, Cardiganshire, Wales
Civil Parish or Township: Llancynfelin
Ecclesiastical parish: Geneur Glyn
County/Island: Cardiganshire
Country: Wales
Registration district: Aberystwyth
Sub-registration district: Geneur
ED, institution, or vessel: 7a
Piece: 2486
Folio: 154
Page Number: 3
Household schedule number: 12
Household Members:
Name Age
John Jones 57 - hatter
Elizabeth Jones 54
Margaret Jones 16
William Jones 7
Isaac Jones 7

I don't see the birth of William.

Deborah

Deborah Report 14 Jun 2019 12:43

Thats brilliant, thank you. Looks like William and Isaac are twins.

I have just ordered from GRO what I think is Lewis Jones death certificate, just hope it is his.

Have also ordered a marriage certificate for Lewis to Ruth Evans, who I am sure is one of his wifes. I know he was married to an Eleanor Humphreys, but I also think there was a 3rd wife.

You are right, so many John Jones and also the same with Lewis Jones.

This has been so complicated.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 14 Jun 2019 12:51

Possibly Elizabeth and John's marriage - although it's after Catherine's birth, so maybe not.

Elizabeth Thomas
in the Wales, Select Marriages, 1541-1900
Name: Elizabeth Thomas
Gender: Female
Marriage Date: 21 May 1827
Marriage Place: Yspytty Cynfyn,Cardigan,Wales
Spouse: John Jones
FHL Film Number: 105216

Deborah

Deborah Report 14 Jun 2019 13:04

I have got twins of John and Elizabeth in my tree, info given to me by a cousin but their names are Isaac and Abram. DOB 12th July 1843, also he has John's death as Jan 1865 Trerddol.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 14 Jun 2019 13:10

Yes, I was about to say that the only other Jones/Thomas birth in the same quarter as Isaac's birth is this one:

JONES, ABRAM mms THOMAS
GRO Reference: 1843 S Quarter in ABERYSTWYTH Volume 27 Page 16

"William" must be a mistake on the part of the enumerator.
Or maybe he was known as William in the family.

Perhaps the Jones parents had a bit of a Biblical sense of humour!

Deborah

Deborah Report 14 Jun 2019 13:14

Lol.

Regards to the 1851 census you posted, in 1851 Lewis Jones would have been 12, but he is not on the census.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 14 Jun 2019 13:36

No, he must have been living elsewhere, perhaps already working.

??

Lewis Jones
in the 1851 Wales Census
Name: Lewis Jones
Age: 19
Estimated birth year: abt 1832
Relation: Servant
Gender: Male
Where born: Llangynfelyn, Cardiganshire, Wales
Civil Parish or Township: Henllys
Ecclesiastical parish: Geneur Glyn
County/Island: Cardiganshire
Country: Wales
Registration district: Aberystwyth
Sub-registration district: Geneur
ED, institution, or vessel: 2a
Piece: 2486
Folio: 14
Page Number: 1
Household schedule number: 2
Household Members:
Name Age
John Edwards 50
William Edwards 44
Eliza Edwards 40
William Evans 16
Lewis Jones 19 - farm servant
Eliza Hughes 22
David James 13

His age could be 12 - it's not clear on the image, and the "9" looks similar to the way the enumerator has written "2" elsewhere.

Deborah

Deborah Report 14 Jun 2019 13:38

Just summarising what I have so far:

No birth record for Lewis with MMN of Thomas, although all the other siblings were baptised and he wasn't.

I have him at age 2 on the 1841 census with parents John and Elizabeth.

Cant find him anywhere on the census's for 1851, 1861 and 1871.

Then he appears with Eleanor in 1881. (They married 1877, I have the certificate).

So I have a gap of 40 years, although I think I have found wife number 2, Ruth Evans (Married 1874) if its her.

I really am wondering now if John wasn't his Father, or Elizabeth wasn't his Mother, and he was sent off elsewhere because of this.

Deborah

Deborah Report 14 Jun 2019 13:42

Our messages crossed, he would have been 12 in 1851.

His DOB on that census is appx. 1832, maybe he told them he was older that he was.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 14 Jun 2019 13:44

As I said in my last post, the "9" looks very like the way the enumerator has written "2" elsewhere on the document.
"19" may be a mistranscription.

Deborah

Deborah Report 14 Jun 2019 14:16

Could be him in the 1861 census, he did go from being a farm hand to a miner, and there are not many Lewis Jones who were born in Llancynfelin.

Deborah

Deborah Report 14 Jun 2019 14:28

2 trees in Ancestry have him married to an Ann Owen 1843 Llancynfelin, decd 1875 Machynlleth,

and an Ann Davies born 1835, no DOD married 18/9/1868

I know they can't both be right, but they could both be wrong.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 14 Jun 2019 15:35

I don't see a marriage to an Ann Owen in a reasonable timeframe.

Ann Davies seems more likley - but marriage 1857, not 1868 -

Thank you ArgyllGran I will order that certificate, Ive done so much research on Lewis that I would like to get a complete picture. I did order the one for Ruth Evans, and what I think is Lewis's death certificate. If Ann Davies is correct then that's all 3 wifes.

I really do appreciate all your help today, I know how much time you have spent on it for me.
