I have a tricky one here hoping someone can help with the little information that I have on him.
Robert Stewart a Farm Labourer of Mitten of Barris kenneff & Georgina Mackie Black had a son (illegitimate) William Stewart on 3rd June 1913 he died 12th August 1960
Georgina went on the marry a Alexander Criggie 5th September 1929 they had 2 children together
I have been told Robert died in WW1 ?
I am looking for further information on Robert Stewart
Thank You

Dea

Dea Report 13 Jul 2019 08:23

There are 100 - 150 deaths on CWGC site for the name Robert (or the initial 'R') Stewart during WW1 so we really do need a bit more info.

As you seem to know exactly where he was born, have you any idea of 'when' - even an approximate year would be helpful.

Any little snippet could lead us a bit further.

What details do you have on Georgina please?

ErikaH Report 13 Jul 2019 08:47

Look for him on 1911 census - available only on SP, and not on subscription.

Presumably the location you give for Robert is from the child's birth cert, so you won't know where he was born.

If not, please clarify.

You say above that Georgina married Alexander Criggie in 1929 ???

Should this be 1919 perhaps ??

Googling ' Mitten of Barris' produces the following result, which may of course be irrelevant

Mitton of Barras
Stonehaven AB39 2UH

Stonehaven is some distance from Stirling

Hi ErikaH,

Sorry, have I missed something here? - where does 'Stirling' come in please?

Hi Dea

Senior moment. Mixing up two separate threads! Should have waited till I was fully awake!

Dea Report 13 Jul 2019 09:16

Thank goodness for that !! - I re-read the thread several times but couldn't work out where Sterling came from.

I too have 'senior moments' nowadays and as it is my birthday today I am even more 'senior' than I was yesterday, I was getting quite worried ;-) :-D :-D. All is well now though ...............

Happy birthday, Dea!

In 1911 there is no Robert Stewart aged 15-40 in the Stonehaven area.
There's one in Inverbervie, Kincardineshire, but he's only 9.

Where was William born, please?

Georgina was 79 when she died in 1962 in Stonehaven district, so born c1883.

There is no Georgina Black aged 27-31 anywhere in Aberdeenshire in 1911.
Nor in Inverbervie, Kincardineshire.

Unless I'm missing it.
I'm not getting any younger either!

I assume this is Georgina in 1901:

Georgina Black
in the 1901 Scotland Census
Name: Georgina Black
Age: 18
Estimated birth year: abt 1883
Relationship: Grand Daur (Granddaughter)
Gender: Female
Where born: Bervie, Kincardineshire
Registration Number: 254
Registration district: Bervie
Civil Parish: Bervie
County: Kincardineshire
Address: House
Occupation: Flax Spinner
ED: 2
Household schedule number: 42
Line: 11
Roll: CSSCT1901_81
Household Members:
Name Age
Barclay Black 80
Jessie Black 77
Georgina Black 18

Barclay died in 1902, and Jessie in 1909.

ArgyllGran Report 13 Jul 2019 11:46

She's listed as their daughter in 1891 - or at least that's what the transcription says - but given Jessie/Janet's age, she must have been their grand-daughter as stated in 1901;

Georgina Bladk
in the 1891 Scotland Census
Name: Georgina Bladk
[Georgina Black]
Age: 8
Estimated birth year: abt 1883
Relationship: Daur (Daughter)
Father's name: Barclay Bladk
Mother's name: Janet Bladk

Choccy Report 13 Jul 2019 11:48

Tree on Ancestry has Georgina Black born 13th July 1882, Gourdon, Kincardineshire. Married Alexander Criggie on 3rd June 1919. He was born 1874 and died in 1929.

Robert Stewart born about 1874, Redgorton, Perthshire.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Jul 2019 11:54

Looking back through the censuses, Barclay and Janet/Jessie only had one child, a daughter, Johan/Johanna, born 1859.
She married John Cargill in 1886.

So presumably Georgina's mother.

ArgyllGran Report 13 Jul 2019 12:06

I'm not convinced by that tree mentioned by Choccy.

In 1901 , Robert 1874 Redgorton is married and he's a butler, not a farm labourer.

Thank you AG xx

Georgina is still at William St in 1911 but apparently (according to an Ancestry tree) under the name of Georgina Mackie - aged 29 and living alone?

ArgyllGran Report 13 Jul 2019 12:18

Perhaps the tree owner is confused by the fact that his middle name was Black ?

Death - not in WW1:

STEWART

Tree owner doesn't mention Jessie at all, though does have Robert in 1901 census, and also the birth of David.

Yes, Georgina alone in 1911, though I can't check the address, nor the name on the original, without spending credits:

Good find, Choccy.

However, the tree also lists David Stewart as a son of Georgina, when he's clearly not.

I'm convinced that Robert 1874 is not William's father.
Assuming that Robert 1874 was still a butler in 1911, it's highly unlikely that a butler from Perth would be a farm labourer in 1913, and fathering a child in Inverbervie, almost 70 miles away.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Jul 2019 12:57

There's this Robert Stewart from Bervie who died in WW1 - but a lot younger than Georgina. If he was William's father, he would only have been 17 at the time - so probably not.

EDIT: In fact, definitely not - he was a shoeing smith before joining up.
