I'm researching (unsuccessfully) my paternal line.
Ethel Goodison was born 1885 in Sheffield to John and Ellen (nee Atkin) in Sheffield.
Ethel married Walter Wildgoose, they had children Lily, Albert (Bert) and Minnie when they lived in Florence Place Heeley Sheffield.
Walter Wildgoose was killed in action in WW1.
Ethel had my father illegitimately in 1923 when she was widowed, she died 5 weeks later and my father was placed in the Sheffield Workhouse by a woman named Mrs. Lattimore (nee Cartledge) who lived at the same address. My father was taken from the workhouse by his father John H. Eaton and registered with a new name in order to be "adopted" by new parents.
Do any of these names ring any bells for anyone doing their family history research please?
Regards,
Marlene

Did you know Walter and Ethel had another child, Walter?

Births Mar 1913 (>99%)
Wildgoose Walter Goodison Sheffield 9c 1007

He sadly died when his nightshirt caught fire.

Walter Wildgoose. aged five years, of 10, Florence Place, Heeley, was burned to death last night in particularly distressing circumstances. The boy was severely scalded about six weeks ago, and was well on the way to recovery. He was left in the bedroom for a few minutes last night but got out of bed, and his clothes became ignited at the fire. He was terribly burned and on arrival at the Sheffield Royal Hospital life was extinct. His father was recently killed while serving in France and the widowed mother has several other children.

What a dreadful story!

Welcome to the boards, Marlene.

You say you are researching your paternal line.
What do you know already about John H Eaton?

I've tried researching John Henry Eaton - but there are several men of that name in Sheffield area in censuses, marriages, etc, and all pretty close in age.

If you know his occupation, even, that would narrow it down.

Thank you everyone for your input. After researching my paternal family since 1992 when my father died, I knew nothing about his background other than he'd been "adopted".
The information I have is that he was placed in Sheffield Workhouse by a Mrs. Lattimore from 10 Florence Place (the address where his mother had died 6 weeks earlier. His name was given as Laurence Wildgoose (birth not registered)
A few weeks later he was discharged from Sheffield Workhouse by John Hy Eaton, "relative father" it says on the discharge paper from Sheffield Archives.
His birth was then registered as Wildgoose Thomas G. August 1923
September 1923 his Baptism at Nether Green Church is Thomas Greatbatch, son of Elizabeth and Thomas who were aged 58 (she) and 42 (he).
I obtained a death certificate for a John Henry Eaton (grinder) which gave me no clues, his grave is a communal one so no family details to go on.
This Eaton/Goodison family connection has been an enigma for me for years.
I was hoping to find living relatives of Eaton or Goodison who may have anecdotal memories of this tragic family.
Does anyone know if 10 Florence Place Heeley was a "back to back" house for there being more than one family living there, I've seen a picture on Picture Sheffield and I remember Florence Place from my childhood. .Moses Preen incidentally married 3 times, two of his wives were sisters, Pauline Cartledge died at Florence Place along with her daughter Laura in the 'flu epidemic, he then married Pauline's sister Annie Lattimore nee Cartledge. So many deaths at that house, it's sad.
Anyway, thanks again and, any more pointers in finding living Goodison or Eaton relatives.
Regards,
Marlene

Just to add: the only evidence of John Hy Eaton is an address given as 174, Gleadless Road Heeley, Sheffield but, I never found that house number on any censuses etc., can anyone please?

The notes with the tree on Ancestry make interesting reading

It might be worth taking out their 14-day free trial, and contacting the 'owner'

Marlene Report 16 Jun 2020 14:54

Thanks for the information everyone which is about where I am, I think the detail on Ancestry is either mine or been taken from my limited knowledge.
The problem I have is that I really don't know if the John Henry Eaton I've researched is the correct one, no family to ask and no detail other than on my father's discharge document from Sheffield Workhouse it says" relative or friend "John Hy Eaton father".
I as hoping there would be a Goodiosn or Eaton descendant who would have heard of this family story.
I have no photos of these families other than a photo of my father's mother given to him by his "adopted" mother

Marlene

The person On Ancestry whose notes I mentioned has a name totally different from yours, and appears to be JH Eaton’s granddaughter

Marlene

Marlene Report 16 Jun 2020 17:51

Hi ErikaH,
I have been in touch with a granddaughter of a John Hy Eaton years ago via Ancestry, she's the daughter of Ernest who was sent to Canada from Sheffield as a "home child" when his father John Henry Eaton had placed him in the childrens homes.
We couldn't prove that we had the same John Henry Eaton as a grandfather because she knew nothing of her grandfather let alone my father. There was no mention of her John Henry Eaton fathering an illegitimate child, her dad Ernest lived in Canada so he had no connection with his parents.
I know lots of families didn't know a lot of skeletons but, there must have been a Goodison, Wildgoose or Eaton who had knowledge that they passed down.
Thank you anyway for all your efforts in trying, it's much appreciated.
Regards,
Marlene
