Yvonne Report 14 Jul 2020 23:55

This is really beginning to confuse me.
I know that Elizabeth Ellen was daughter of William Tipping and Mary Jenion.
Mary Jenion was the daughter of William Jenion and Jane Cowley.
William Jenion was son of Henry Jenion and Mary.
William died in 1859.
These are the facts I am sure of.
So what's confusing me?
Erika gives possible children of Henry and Mary born 1811 to 1818 but I have Henry and Mary in 1841 living with children born 1821 to 1839 - am I missing something here?
Also, I have Jane Cowley born and baptised in 1830 in Liverpool, yet when she's in the census with Thomas Rushton it says she was born in Carlow, Ireland.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 15 Jul 2020 09:48

If still alive, Henry and Mary's earlier children would have been living and working elsewhere by 1841 - not still with their parents.

Re Jane, born Carlow -

She was married in Liverpool - doesn't mean she was born there.
In 1851 census it says she was born in Liverpool, but that could be a mistake.

Apart from 1851 all the censuses (1861-1901) say your Jane was born c1826 in Ireland , so Ireland would seem to be correct - and even 1851 says she was born c1825 - so unless she had added 5 or 6 years to her age (compared with Jane Cowley born c1830) , she may be a different person .

.
Jane Cowley born c1830 in Walton -on-the-Hill is with her parents and siblings in Walton in 1841, but I don't see any of them after that.

The info regarding Mary Jenion is correct - she did have three husbands, according to my mother-in-law..
I don't know how you guys find all this stuff but thanks for getting me out of my confused fog!
Thanks.

I thought I'd send for the birth certificate of Thomas Jenion born 1839 to see who his parents were. I searched the GRO index but only one showed up:

M qtr 1839 Prescot 20/699

I sent for the certificate and mother is shown as Margaret Jenion but no father is registered. The birth was registered by Sarah, aunt. Now I'm trying to figure out where this fits in.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 26 Jul 2020 22:27

My guess would be that he was the illegitimate son of Margaret, daughter of Henry and Mary (listed on the 1841 census, aged 20).

This may be the aunt Sarah, another daughter of Henry and Mary:

Sarah Jennion
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name: Sarah Jennion
Event Type: Christening
Event Date: 1 Nov 1818
Event Place: Lancashire, England, United Kingdom
Event Place (Original): Huyton by Roby, Lancashire, England
Gender: Female
Father's Name: Henry Jennion
Mother's Name: Mary

(Sarah's baptism already posted by Erika.)

Presumably Thomas in 1851, having been given his stepfather's name:

Not sure about that marriage - Henry's occupation has always been shown as pavior but on this marriage it says he was a labourer.

The Thomas b. 1839 is shown in 1841 census as Thomas Genson but the birth certificate I received has the name as Jenion. This is the only birth I could find for Thomas born 1839, nothing showed up for Thomas Genson.in the GRO index.

I find this whole family totally confusing.

The Worshipful Company of Paviors.

www.paviors.org.uk

The Paviors are a City of London livery company with records dating back to 1276, but now with aims to promote the ‘craft of paving’ through its outreach programmes and fellowship.

I wonder if their archived records show anything.?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 27 Jul 2020 09:16

As far as the surname in 1841 census is concerned, you said yourself that the name is spelled many different ways.
It depends on how the enumerator thought it should be spelled, and also on what the transcriber could make of the often bad handwriting.

I think we are sure that the 1841 with Henry's occupation as pavior is the correct one, even though Ancestry and FMP have transcribed it with two different spellings, as in the two versions we've posted.

Even though Henry's occupation is shown as labourer on the marriage record, I can only see one Margaret Jenion or similar in Huyton with father Henry in 1841.

The Worshipful Company of Paviors is London-orientated. I doubt if they would have any records relating to Lancashire.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 27 Jul 2020 11:04

Until 1875, there were no penalties for not registering births.

Your Thomas 1839 may simply not have been registered

Although, the other possible scenario is that Henry, the Pavior, was his grandfather, but named as father when Thomas married to save face. OR - Thomas didn't know he wasn't actually Henry's son

Which would mean that the birth cert IS the right child
