For several years I and others have been trying to find a connection between 2 families. Then facts are as follows.
In c1888 a Margaret Simpson was born in Edinburgh as 1 of 12 children to a John Simpson c1841 tailor and Elizabeth Henderson c1845 - 1889.
In 1891 census Margaret was shown as an adopted daughter of Henry McPeak c1840-1918 and his wife Margaret Turnbull c1842-1910 who had 12 children in their own right. In the 1901 census Margaret was shown as a McPeak.

The quest is to establish a link between Simpson & McPeak.

I know that Henry's brother - Charles 1842 tailor married an Elizabeth Simpson of Carnwath but I have found no link in that direction.
Going back to Margaret her mother was born to Andrew Henderson C1809 (also I think a tailor)and Ann Riva c 1809 - c 1866 and she was born to Paul Riva c1786 and Margaret Lyon c1786.
It is interesting that one of Henry McPeak's children was called Ann Riva H McPeak pointing to a link with Riva.
Research has shown that there is a lot of tailors on the Simpson side
As said before there appears to be a llnk between McPeak and Simpson but what it is in a blood line link ,so far, has eluded several people

I don’t have Scotlands People so can’t help. But playing devils advocate an adopted child doesn’t mean that there is a blood relationship.

You mention blood line links - does that mean that you have taken a dna test but can’t join the dots?

If you would care to C&P the census records, it would be much easier to assimilate the info you are asking us to consider

How have you proved that the child living with the Mcpeaks in 1891 is the one whose parents you have named? Why do you assume that there was a blood link? If it is the same child, she may simply have been taken in because her mother died in 1889.

Ann Riva McPeak's other middle name was Henderson:

MCPEAK
ANNIE RIVA HEND[erson]

If there's a blood link, it could be between any two of the four names - Henderson, Turnbull, McPeak, Simpson.
Not necessarily just between Simpson and McPeak.

Henry McPeak's mother's maiden surname was Duncan.
Elizabeth Henderson mother was Riva.
John Simpson's mother (per his marriage cert) was Davidson.
Margaret Turnbull's mother (per marriage cert) was Dickson.

As Brian says, no obvious link among any of them.

The McPeak and Simpson families must have been at least very good friends from at least the time the two couples married, to have given their various surnames as middle names to several children, and for the McPeaks to have taken in young Margaret after her mother died (I agree with ErikaH's suggestion)..

ErikaH Report 9 Jul 2023 18:15

Sorry, lost my post - just had a violent storm which affected the system

I was suggesting that the links were purely down to the various marriages.................and one didn't have to be a blood relation to do the charitable thing and take in a wee child whose mother had died.
