For going undercover,on Panorama, to report poor nursing of elderly and abuse,after she had reported it and nothing was done.---Margaret Haywood , 58 , of Liverpool was struck of the nursing register -do you agree?

No I do not agree - she should be rewarded for her actions not punished or dont we live in an open society anymore and should people be afraid to report wrongs

As a carer of 20 +years I would also report any mistreatment

That is disgusting, that anyone doing the job for which she was paid should be sacked.... and WORSE..

I think she was struck off because she did nothing about reporting it , but allowed it to continue whilst she helped film the documentary .



Although very sad .

We sent people to hospital and they come back worse than they went in
We have refused to accept any now with out someone going and doing an assesment first
We are not a nursing home,but a resdential home
So dont do nursing care
Some of the people they send back need full time nursing which we dont provide

They said she had breached her nursing duties by filming dying patients.......but I thought it said that she had got the permission of relatives of the people involved.....

......that poor old lady dying of cancer and had already waited half an hour for the pain relief medication she was due.....

The reason she was struck off is because she showed up what was wrong with nursing.......they were shown up.......they are the ones who should have got the boot.....

Another one was the Tory Minister who was arrested and his office ransacked because he had raised issues of the lapses in immigration.....he was cleared.....

Then we get the Home Secretary saying he had divulged sensitive issues........yes of course he had.......he is the opposition for God sake.....it is his job to look into and expose deficiencies, especially those which affect our country's security......

She was miffed because he had exposed Labours' lack of care.......

The reason she was struck off was not for blowing the whistle, but for breach of patient confidentiality by secretly filming many vulnerable, elderly patients in the last stages of their lives, knowing that it was unlikely that they would be able to give any meaningful consent to that process, in circumstances where their dignity was most compromised.

Any excuse eh?

Don't they think that the poor women's dignity had already been compromised?

I think the whole situation is disgraceful and it is about time that the criminals.... in any field... were sorted out.

I don't know the story but maybe she thought nothing would change if she said something to her bosses,but to go public .I think she was very brave and did the right thing .I am sorry she has been struck off.Not many people would have done what she did.We need more like her.It is disgraceful the way some people are looked after (or not looked after).It makes my blood boil.It is a shame that more staff cannot speak out.

No she should not have been struck off.

Please remember though that when YOU see things happening in hospital that are not appropriate REPORT it yourself.

I have twice, one it involved the night team who left elderly patients crying for bedpans whilst they were eating their curry and chatting about relationships.

The second was an anaesthetist who thought she was above reproach for chipping teeth and denying it.

Ask to see the most senior nursing manager on shift and make sure they show you their report!

It is up to all of us to try to stop these bad practices.

I am disgusted that this person has been treated so badly after her secret filming.

What the hell is wrong with our society when our frail and elderly population are left to starve because they can't feed themselves, sit or lay in their own bodily waste because they are unable to toilet themselves or have to wait for much needed medication or pain relief when they are in agony? These poor people are given no respect or dignity.

I do hope the NHS, Health Authorities and RCN look at what is going on under their own noses and accept that things must change right away.

Those who blow the whistle on bad practise should be applauded not sacked!

We get the same thing
They phone up and ask for medical details,which we dont know the answer
They then get shirty and ask for the Matron,Senior Nurse or Doctor on duty
We get fed up telling them we dont have any of those as we are not a nursing home
Some are really rude,and have been reported several times
As you say,same thing at the hospital,think we are all nurses

As I understand it she did report it-first to her immediate manager and when no notice was taken to the one above that-still nothing changed.

The worrying thing is that we could all be in the position of these unfortunate patients and no one will dare say anything !

To be fair, sometimes it is sheer lack of staff with any experience, though no way should this nurse have been sacked. When a patient in hospital, I have seen that nurses are unavoidably unable to respond immediately, and if am able to get out of bed, have fed other patients, fetched them water, and fetched a bedpan or commode. This is not a police state, and as long as you are not interfering with treatment I see no reason not to help. I help make beds too.

When my mum was in hospital years ago with a stroke
I was told ,she is not eaitng at all
Soon found out the reason
They kept putting her food on the side she had the stroke. Her arm was useless and she couldnt reach it with the other hand
Not rocket science is it
Put the food on the side that works
Common sense seems a bit lacking at times

She should be praised for bringing it to the attention of the authorities.

Surely she can appeal against the decision.

I would certainly give her my support.

thank you for all your replies -majority agreeing it`s unfair , as a nurse myself I am shocked , she was CARING about her patients , similar to what happened to me and look where it got me -now no job in 12 weeks time , Ros xx
