On another tack now for holiday, anyone been to Roda, in Corfu?
Seems to be cheaper to take a two week trip there once we have counted in rent for place in England, petrol costs and hassle of driving etc and more likely to get good weather!

Provided you can get a cheap flight Liz, but the hassle of the airport probably equates to the hassle of driving, given that you have to drive to the airport!! Where would you fly from? Park the car etc, don't forget parking charges when doing a comparison.

Not been to Corfu so can't comment though.

Hi Ann, this is Blue Garden Apartments, Roda, looks nice and better reviews. I also realised studio apartments wouldn't work for us these days, this place offers 1 bedroom aptmt so much better and more space. Goes from Gatwick so a long coach trip, we don't bother with the car, our holiday starts when we get on the coach, but it's only £38ish for him and half that for me as I get oap coach fare lol At the other end, it's a 2 hr transfer so a bit long too but you get to see the island on the way, Roda is in the north of Corfu which is a bit further north than Kefalonia where we have been before, and close to the mainland, you can get day trips to Albania from the island which sounds interesting. We have been later in the year than this in the past and it's been lovely and warm so should be good weather for me to snooze and snore on a less crowded beach, as the season will be winding down a bit. Selfcatering holiday with minimum luggage allowance, 15 kgs, and no meals is £799 for two so when you consider an apartment in England is around £600 and more, and then the cost of petrol, hassle of driving there and back and food here, it probably won't work out any different and we can be more sure of good weather.
Just wondered if anyone knew the resort?

Thanks Mabel, I thought it sounded nice, don't need mad nightlife at our age.
I am sure there will be some trips to go on to see other areas of the island, if I can get myself up in time lol

Hi Amanda, thanks for that, bakery and icecream shop - sounds good to me lol

I would prefer to fly from Norwich, the airport is only up the road but there don't seem to be many places available at the right dates. Will be going to travel agent tomorrow to see what I can find, but knowing about some of the places helps when deciding.

I haven't been to Corfu but I would say go for it while you have the chance. As you say the weather will be good every day and everything else different, the scenery, the language and the currency.

Go and enjoy.

Having said that we are off to Ireland on Saturday where the weather is wet, the currency is the same as here and they speak in my native tongue, but we are going to get out of the heat for a while and to do a bit of family research in Dublin

Wendy, I am sure you will enjoy the change immensely, have a good time. I did wonder whether to contact you but wasn't sure I would inflict him on anyone lol

I just rang Norwich travel but closed till morning now.

I liked the idea of Crete too actually, but I think the flights go on Tuesdays, not sure, so he would have to book more time off work, altho not a problem I don't think as he has some time spare, would just mean him hanging about at the beginning of the week altho there is lots to do in the garden and such to keep him busy I suppose. lol I have heard of Elounda.

Hi Liz, stayed at Acharavi, almost next door to Roda. Visited all the northern resorts, Sidari etc by bus or bike, and coach trips further afield. Corfu is wonderful, you will enjoy it. Lots of photos somewhere in the archives..lol

Already spoken to Wendy thanks, just a while ago, and it's a studio which isn't really good for us, with me and my sleep problems. It only dawned on me this afternoon when I was talking to a travel agent, that with one bedroom, he wouldn't disturb me if I needed to sleep on because of my fibromyalgia or cfs, but could get up and make himself breakfast etc, sit out on balcony or go out leaving me to rest.
thanks for the thought tho Mummo.

Magnolia, thanks for that, I will talk to o.h. tonight when he gets in and go for that I think. Knowing my luck, the last places will be gone lol, story of my life but if so, then not meant to go there.
Will keep you all posted.
thanks for input

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 2 Sep 2009 19:42

I think I have sorted out the holiday, finally. I got up at 11 am, too early for me, to ring the travel agents for our local airport but he wasn't in the most receptive of moods so I didn't do it and sort of said, Sod Abroad, as he was saying he had to book extra days off if we weren't going til the monday or tuesday, and had to book it today as his boss was away from tomorrow, that company is rubbish for organising things and he would have to make sure the other chaps would cover his shift.

Then he told me he has to work more the week before we go as the other lad is away, so working 2pm to 12pm -normally I jump for joy that I get longer on my own, but meant he would be tired and not about to sort stuff out to go away, the Friday he would have to work 2-10 pm instead of 11 - 5 so would be late home then we would have to pack the car next day and he would do most of the driving and would be too tired to be driving 200 miles etc

That got me thinking after he went to work (I went back to bed for an hour) so I got up and rang the local airport after all, got a choice of several good apartments in nice places in N. and NW Corfu for under £750, travelling the Monday afternoon, so would leave him Sat and Sun to rest after the overtime, and pack etc, and Monday am for last minute stuff. I rang and told him to book the Monday off while his boss is still there as the flights get back on the Monday 5th Oct around 3pm, so plenty of time to get home, we are ten mins drive from airport, and rest up for work early the next day.

We just have to decide which out of the four shortlisted ones, I have been reading reviews etc, and go to the airport tomorrow morning (another early morning for me) and book it! Hooray! Will be Roda, Acharavi, or Sidari, which is next to San Stephanos, a place we have had recommended by three different people, o.h's son, ex, and a workmate!

With the way the weather is going I was getting worried we would be in Kent in wet dismal weather and decided I would much rather be on a sunny beach or paddling in the sea, wearing skimpy clothes!
Cross your fingers it all comes together lol

Watch this space, lol

Thanks for your help everyone.

Go for it Liz ! Acharavi as I said earlier is a splendid spot to stay and do all the touring from. Cant remember the name of the apartments we stayed in unless I get all the photos out of the archives..lol, but Roda and Sidari are just the same sort of pleasant places to stay. Get it booked and enjoy !!

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 2 Sep 2009 21:42

Thanks Sue, I did look there and found I was already a member but couldn't recall my password, however despite doing the necessary for them to send me my password, it didn't happen. I was able to read the reviews but wanted to mail one person and ask some questions.
I looked on lots of review sites so have pretty good idea of what to expect from all of them
I also spoke with o.h's ex who went to San Stephanos in June and she mentioned the mosquitoes which seem to be a problem over all Corfu, so will make sure I take my antihistamine tablets and some insect repellant and stuff too, as I usually get nasty reactions from the bites, even here in the UK.

Oh! Corfu. How I'd like to go there again, but no chance with my OH being housebound.Went there in 1980's and stayed in a wonderful hotel at Nissaki beach, not far from Cassiopi. It was unspoiled then.Remember having a meal at a taverna literally on the beach at Sidari, also a visit to Gerald Durrells house that I'd read about in his book"My Family and other animals"
You couldn't have trips then to Albania.
I love the Greek Islands.Hope you get there and have a wonderful time.

You should have a really nice holiday in Corfu, Liz.
A lovely place, and the people are so friendly and helpful.
No language problems, they speak perfect English - and play cricket, of course.
We stayed in Corfu town when we went in the '80s. So very like Malta - a lot of the stone used for the buildings actually came from Malta, and so did the architect, I think. Probably from Valletta! Can't remember if we ate anything similar to the cheesecakes, though.
One of the best holidays I have ever had, even with two small boys in tow, in those days.
One day I will get to Crete.
