The little girl without a book

Once upon a time there was a little girl called Queenie. Queenie was a very pretty girl apart from her squint and permanant frown. These came about from her insistance of reading. Unfortuantely she read in half light books that were forbidden, she also read books far too old for her, which in turn just confused her.
One day MR and Mrs King took away all of Queenies books, leaving Queenie heartbroken.
For weeks Queenie languished in halfway state. So bad did she get that Mummy King felt for her daughter and tried to sneak her a book back in.
NO said Daddy King that child needs other interests, but what asked Mummy.

Mr King thought hard and came up with the solution that Queenie needed the INTERNET ...
so at great cost he had it installed ( he did also know that it would benifit him ! ) Mummy King dithered but agreed when she realised she could shop on line.
Queenie brightened up because there on this new thing was books. It wasn't long before it was realised that all Queenie was doing again was reading, the squint and the frown had returned. So this time Mummy King, not wanting to lose her shopping decided to take action.
Amazed she was to find Amazon Books mmm this way she could check what her daughter was reading.
Little did they know that Queenie, never being able to get on her own computer had started going out to the internet cafe's that she had read about.

The fresh air did her wonders, the internet cafe was better

over to you all

UzziAndHerDogs Report 24 Sep 2009 20:55

Anyway day after day whilst Mrs King was internet shopping and Dad King was on adults only sites, Queenie legged it down to the internet cafe.

The daylight did wonders for her, the squint disappeared and the frown softened, no more did she need to read by torch light. Queenie had found a new world

Queenie found she wasn't interested in the internet cafe after all. She continues skipping down the street and came upon an amusement arcade. Inside were the most wonderful machines that would light up and make wondrous noises. Queenie realised she needed a coin to make the machines works. She put her hand in her pocket.........

... and discovered one coin, nestling amongst redundant bookmarks, web addresses for miracle squint cures and other assorted goodies.

Drawing herself up to her full height and adopting an "I'm over 18" pose, she looked around the myriad of machines, each promising huge returns for only a very small investment.

Which one to choose.....

Ther was one in the corner, not the brightest or the biggest pay out but something about the machine drew Queenie close,

Slower she reached for the slot with her coin

...When she felt a firm hand on her right shoulder. Turning, she came face to face with the wrinkled old librarian who had for many years been her only confidante.

"A fool and her money are easy parted" said the whiskered one in friendly tones.

Queenie ....

Listened to her old friend and knew she could buy a book in the second hand shop or an hours internet time, both would be better use of her coin, but still the dusty old machine in the corner drew her with it's winking lights.

SueMaid

Again she reached towards the machine with her coin in her hot little hand. A whisper came from the machine - "come on Queenie you know you want to".........

Conscience on Queenie's right shoulder lost out to temptation on her left, and the coin slid, almost of its own accord, into the slot of the dusty, winking machine.

The lights on the machine went into overdrive, strange electronic music played, a small crowd gathered, and ....

UzziAndHerDogs

UzziAndHerDogs Report 24 Sep 2009 22:18

There was a click a blink, the machine wheezed music out, or what went for music. slowly the reels stopped turning clunk went the first reel .....a book

clink went the second, the crowd held their breath as another book came into site .......and slowly stopped .... the 3rd reels span with a whish and whhoosh

UzziAndHerDogs Report 24 Sep 2009 22:20

Queenie held her breath did she want another book , but then it would mean another play or 3 ......the reel creaked to a stop
