I havent been on for months due to illness and tonight i came on and made a mistake !
I thought the page i put first request was just for people with same name to share....then i put request on records board for help....
NO i hadn't murdered anyone...but looked like i had...As soon as it was pointed out to me MY mistake i sent Pm to everyone explaining and saying sorry and thanking them for their kind help..but a couple still moaning at me, i am thinking of not continuing.Yes i know most of the people on here are lovely so helpful...Aaarrrr.Ciao Joanie

I know what you mean Joanie. I have had some help from wonderful people who give their time freely. However, a few of them do get "stroppy" if people post on more than one board. It does sometimes create unnecessary work, but many newcomers are not aware of this and post on more than one board with the idea that readers might miss one board and pick up the request on another.

The helpers do roam around all the boards, so one request is sufficient. However, whilst most of them are understanding and polite, unfortunately, there are those who tend to be 'bossy', although why, I don't know, unless they are having some competition with each other (which sometimes does seem to be the case!). Don't worry about it. Anyone can be a helper, so for each 'cranky' one of them, there are plenty of others who are understanding - and just as helpful.

Joanie I wouldn't worry about it.

Take no notice Joanie, they are probably suffering pmt or hot flushes.

When I first put a request on the boards, being new to comps and geneology, I put the same one on two boards. I didn't realize that it was a hanging offense, and two people in particular were scathing ,one even hinted that my rels were of loose morals.

It was ages before I had the courage to try again, but now find that folk are, in the main, super, smashing, luvly. Don't let the mardies put you off. luv Nina

I wouldn't worry about it Joanie.

Some people get a bit intense.

My dad doesn't own the site so I don't care how many boards you post on!

You paid your money like the rest of us.

Enjoy.

Joanie. Don't let these people get to you.
There is one person in particular who gives the same info to everyone who posts on the Trying to find board.
It's so annoying, because most people have already tried it lol

Agree with Annina, must be a certain time of the month.
I have found that the majority of people will help if they can, and do.

Don't let them win!!

I often look at the timewaster thing and have a bit of a laugh.
In my opinion if I didnt have time to look something up for someone else I wouldnt do it.
Mostly its the pleasure of the find and I dont really care if someone else has already done it.
I would say if people get infuriated by wasting time looking up things that someone else has already done, that Matyrdom is overated

Just what exactly are "time wasters"? It seems to me that if someone has the time to help, they do. If not, they don't.

How is it 'wasting time', if one person answers the query on Thread A, whilst another person answers it on Thread B?. Is that different from there being only one query on one thread - and answered by six different helpers, all at the same time - all giving the same answer?

Think about it!

UzziAndHerDogs Report 26 Sep 2009 00:03

I have obviously missed something ( nothing unusual there then )

I do find threads slating others without saying why a bit disconcerting, a lot of us/them others have had problem threads but most do explain why they are objecting.
please remember not everybody reads Gen boards.
Joanie don't be disheartened. even some of the best friendships have started with a misunderstanding.

the problem with duplicate posting - which by the way is not allowd by GR - is that people are digging around for information on one board unaware that someone else is finding the same information on another - waste of someone's time. I always point out, nicely I hope, that duplicate posting is not allowed and explain why and trust that the poster understands why it is not allowed. I realise that sometimes people are quite desperate to find someone and think that by posting the same request on three or four boards will bring more success but in reality it doesn't. I really wish there was just one Trying to Find board and ditch the Records, History and Surname, because seems to me they are all much the same. Were that the case the problem would never arise. I just love digging around the census for people and feel quite elated when I find what someone is looking for - sad I know, but true!!! I have time on my hands and enjoy it. I rarely visit Chat and General these days.

Another reason people get annoyed is that they may be using their own spare credits for a search, they put the info down on the thread, change boards then find the query was answered half hour before on another board.
Thats a total waste of time and money. and would make a saint feel cross :o)))

Still, a polite but firm reprimand explaining why the annoyance would be enough, as we were all new to the boards at some time, and many were unsure of the method of posting for help.

Ps Joanie, if you think there are a few 'orrible people on Gen, you need to come on chat sometimes LOL !

:o))

I didn't see it, and can't find it to make any comment.

Do find it a bit odd that this thread has been put on chat to complain about treatment received on General, though... now if it was me, I would have come out all guns blazing on the board I was illtreated on! lol

But then we are all different, I suppose.

I really don't mind seeing newbies with multiple board requests for help... usually a gentle hint that this is actually against t & c's is fine and works if nicely done..... but some older members really do take the biscuit, I notice! I remember when the 1911 census came out... people asking on all the boards for the same look ups... and their numbers often showing that they had been members for some time, so should have known better... and so many hacked off researchers using their expensive credits to look up the same info that had been provided by various people freely and willingly on every board on GR... what a waste of resources and goodwill!! Others could have benefitted from the credits wasted!

Love

To be honest I can see BOTH sides to having put duplicate threads on boards

But no one has the authority to be nasty to anyone.

Those that don't want to help DON'T.. it's easy

I pick and choose who I want to help...it's easy

The day I start being nasty is the time to come off boards !!
