Blue Moon

Blue Moon Report 10 Oct 2009 08:18

This is the one I remember my mum singing to me,
I was singing it (well trying to) with my Grand-daughter the other week.
The song was written by John Walter Bratton in 1907, with lyrics added in 1932 by Jimmy Kennedy
Looking at the age of the song ( 1932 ) I bet my Grandmother sang it to my Mum.

If you go out in the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise.
If you go out in the woods today
You'd better go in disguise.

For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic.

Chorus:
Picnic time for teddy bears,
The little teddy bears are having a lovely time today.
Watch them, catch them unawares,
And see them picnic on their holiday.
See them gaily dance about.
They love to play and shout.
And never have any cares.
At six o'clock their mommies and daddies
Will take them home to bed
Because they're tired little teddy bears.

If you go out in the woods today,
You'd better not go alone.
It's lovely out in the woods today,
But safer to stay at home.

For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic

TO CHORUS

Every teddy bear, that's been good
Is sure of a treat today
There's lots of wonderful things to eat
And wonderful games to play

Beneath the trees, where nobody sees
They'll hide and seek as long as they please
Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic

TO CHORUS

Edit - Oh, I just remembered I still have my Panda who went on all those picnics,
he's sitting on my bed waiting for the next one....lol

my mam used to sing to my daughter

we'll keep a welcome in the hillside
we'll keep a welcome in the vales

daughter loved this,
especiall as she thought it was just for her our street/row of houses was called hillside

she sang it everywhere, as a toddler,
her fella down loaded it sung by male voice choir for her recently

I love your submission, Julie*Ann. I am English, but a Welsh Male Voice choir singing that song just chokes me up.

LW as was

I remember all those songs from my childhood.
My granddad was a lovely singer and so were my dad, aunts and uncles.
I have fond memories of sitting around the fire (big black range), lights out and all of us singing.
Specialist songs sung by granddad, my youngest aunt who was a beautiful singer, uncle Thomas... a trained singer.... and all the rest of us too many to mention.
My favourites were... Danny boy, I'll take you home again Kathleen, My love is like a red red rose..... Oh I Could go on and on, but i will make myself cry.

My mother used to sing and play the piano.
The little boy that Santa Claus forgot, which had my sister and I howling with tears running down our cheeks and asking her to "sing it again mummy?"
My mother also sang songs which made her cry in memory of her mother whom she had not seen since leaving home... bless her.
'My Yiddisha mama...' and...
'I can see the lights of home' which made us cry, as she also used to cry while singing it, although we did not understand the significance of it at the time.

My son hunted high and low for a copy of Ann Shelton singing "my Yiddisha Mama" for me for Christmas... I put it on and cried. My son threw his arms round me and cried with me!!
Isn't music such a large and important part of our lives and history?

All the happy , happy songs we all remember , we sang on buses and trains, travelling around with the battalion, some quite risque, my dad was a soldier.

Happy singing everyone... ;-0)

Deanna - what a lovely story.

I would cry at: Carry me back to old Virginny; the Miner's dream of home; and especially Keep The Homes Fires Burning.

Deanna Report 10 Oct 2009 18:18

Oh yes, 'keep the home fires burning' gets me too.
It must have been so poignant hearing that during the war.
Bless them.... and we are STILL fighting, poor lads, and NOW lasses too.

We'll be together in the spring again, and walk together down an English lane.

Deanna

Deanna Report 10 Oct 2009 20:51

Jean, that is a beautiful song.

I looked it up for us, as I could not get past the second line... but knew the tune, anmd every-other line. ;-0)

We'll gather lilacs in the spring again
And walk together down an English lane
Until our hearts have learned to sing again
When you come home once more

And in the evening by the firelight's glow
You'll hold me close and never let me go
Your eyes will tell me all I need to know
When you come home once more

We'll gather lilacs in the spring again
And walk together down an English lane
Until our hearts have learned to sing again
When you come home once more

And in the evening by the firelight's glow
You'll hold me tight and never let me go
Your eyes will tell me all I want to know
When you come home once more

When you come home once more
When you come home once more

Deanna X
Right, leave me alone, I'm off to bed and I don't want to be crying...... boo hoo hoo ;-0)

Teddys Girl

Teddys Girl Report 11 Oct 2009 09:45

I lived with my Grandparents, and poor old Grandad had to leave his drink, in the pub at the top of the road, and come and sing me to sleep .
One I can remember was Bye Bye Blackbird.

Deanna

Deanna Report 12 Oct 2009 11:33

Your poor granddad, bless him.;-0)
