Very much, make me wonder what the people were like and what sort of life they had. Did they love their husband or wife, or did they just willingly accept their lot. |

Was it the Victorians who used to photograph their dead relatives as a keep sake? |

I certainly treasure the old photos that have finished up in my care. Came mostly from my mothers mother, possible started off with her mother. English relatives would send photos in the Victorian times to their Kiwi relatives, presumably the Kiwi rellies sent some of their own back. This is how I got into genealogy, when my son asked if I had any photos of my parents and grandparents that he could have and I dragged out all the photos and he asked 'who, what, where, why, when.' |

I have a photo of my gt gt grandfather with 3 of his sons and their wives, plus a daughter, plus the infant son of one son and his wife (my gt grandparents), plus 3 other people. Taken the day before my gt grandparents sailed for New Zealand. Another photo I call 'The Wedding Breakfast'. I came to the conclusion from the assessed ages of the people in it that it was taken the day my grandparents married, and as I have a newspaper cutting about the wedding, which says that the reception was held at the home of the brides parents I have put 2 and 2 together. Hope 4 is the correct answer. I have one carte de visite which intrigues me, a woman in a crinoline dress, she is holding a fan. I dont know who she is. The photo was taken in Poona, in India. A mystery waiting to be solved. |
