While we were shopping yesterday,,the 2 miniutes silence was announced and everthing stopped,,,apart from two women old enough to know better,,weaving in and out of stationary silent shoppers,,chatting away about bloody 'on the vine tomatoes'... There were groups of teenagers observing the silence,,,small children stood with ther parents ,,and these two oblivious to it all.. I was disgusted,

yes I walked into our local supermarket just as the silence began and 2 people older than me walked in oblivious to it all and was weaving through the stationary shoppers.

Claire i think it,s down to the person and there choice, you cannot force people to do things they dont want too, and quite rightly so, i did observe the 2 mins out of respect for all them that did not have a choice. Lilxx

Same thing happened in Morrisons yesterday when I was shopping. I was just at the checkout with my trolley when the 2 minute silence started; everybody was still, silent, apart from one ignorant so-and-so who was more worried about getting his two large cases of Stella Artois onto his trolley and telling his other half to phone a taxi.

Hi i also feel some find it to hard to remember and just carry on going about there day as they do, maybe too close to home for them to do so, which is a shame also. As long as they are not doing it deliberatly Lilxx

I think that when it is so obvious that a whole shop is standing silent and unmoving, its nothing but ignorance and disrespect when people talk and carry on doing their shop. Even if its against someones beliefs they still will, in a public place stand quiet in respect for those people who do.There is no excuses at all. Jayne x

Very disrespectful but there choice, Lilx

Jayne Report 12 Nov 2006 11:30

I certainly wouldnt be defending them for their ignorance. rudeness is inexcusable in any situation. politeness costs nothing especially for two minutes of their time. I hope they got a flat tyre on the way home. Jayne x

I think the only excuse, if you can call it that it that they are oblivious and haven't realised what is going on around them.

I agree with Lil to some extent but then they should also appreciate that others may feel differently and wish to show their respect in silence. Its a hard one, should these people avoid these situations where they have to pass people standing in silence??

Jayne Report 12 Nov 2006 12:10

I would feel EMBARRESSED by carrying on with my shopping in that situation when Its obvious when a whole supermarket stands suddenly stock still after the announcement for the 2 mins silence, even to the thickest or most ignorant of people you should be able to stand quietly for two minutes out of your life. obviously there are some who cannot be held to ransom for ignoring such a big gathering of mass stillness, such as children or those who are mentally disabled. but we all know that isnt deliberate its hard to keep a young child quiet...I know this from experience. When they was a minutes silence on 7th July, I was standing on the shop floor where I work and some ignorant man came up and asked me where he could find brown envelopes!!!! One minute for goodness sake is that too long to wait? Sue
