I've conflicting things, 1 saying it's a prison, and another saying it's a mental hospital.

I always thought it was a prison. Googling for the definition, came up with this:- penitentiary `peni'tenshuree A correctional institution for those convicted of major crimes Kath. x

Paul, A major crime in those days probably wouln't be as major as we would expect it to be these days. You were sent to prison for quite trivial things then - (maybe it's something the courts could start doing again these days!!!!!). Kath. x

Had to look this one up in the dictionary as wasn't sure my self. Chambers dictionary defines the word as - A place for the performance of penance (obs), An asylum for prostitutes (archiac) What next, a bit off the beaten track? Liesele
