Have put Norton Antivirus on my system and since then I can't send emails. Can receive them but it times out before the messages are sent. Have turned the time thingy up to the maximum as told to do by the helpdesk but still can't send them. Any ideas?

Can you prove it is Norton causing it Dawn. That is, is there somewhere that you have ticked to scan outgoing e mails? if so can you temporarily untick it and try to send. Thatw ay you will know it is Norton not OE. ann Glos

I don't know if it will be the same, but I installed McAfee on my computer and the same sort of problem - the only way I found to get around it was to turn off the spam filtering. I still have Firewall and Virus protection, just got rid of the Email one. I have to say it still isn't 100% right - I get messages up when I first turn on the computer and log in that Outlook isn't my default email or whatever - I have checked the settings and it is? It might be completely different for Norton, but it's worth trying? Kaye x

When you have OE open, go to Tools, Options and then the General Tab, is OE set as the Default Mail Handler ??? Ron www.genealogyprinters*com

Ron - I've done that on mine but it makes no difference, for some reason McAfee doesn't seem to recognise it as that? Kaye x

Dawn - have you got a little Norton icon on the blue bar in the bottom right corner? Try double clicking on that and I would think it will bring up some sort of menu where you will be able to disable the email scanning. Kaye x

Hi Ron - thanks. I had McAfee on my comp for ages, but then I had to upgrade it. I did this and installed it all fine, but then Outlook wasn't working - I couldn't receive emails. I got around this by disabling the scam protection on McAfee, but I keep getting a message up about Outlook not being my default handler or not being able to manage the task (or something similar). Outlook is definitely set as my Default Mail Handler (just checked again)? Any ideas? Kaye x

Dawn. Open Norton, click on Firewall, then Configure. Click the Programs Tab at the top then scroll down the list of programs at the bottom of the page, what does it say for Outlook Express ?? Ron www.genealogyprinters*com

Kaye, the only thing i can suggest is to look around in McAfee for a button to configure the e-mail account to make it the default. Ron www.genealogyprinters*com
