Dawnie. Turn off outgoing mail scanning in Norton and see if that cures it. Open Norton, ckick on options, then on Anti Virus in the drop down menu, click on e-mail on the left hand side, take the tick out of Scan Outgoing Mail. This is not needed and it's there to prevent your PC from sending out any virus's but if Nortons doing it's job they shouldn't be on your PC in the first place. Here you go. You need to dissable outgoing email checks within Norton - there is a known problem with this product and Outlook Express. This is taken from the Microsoft Knowledge Base, and is a known issue with Norton AnitVirus and not a problem releated to Postal Inspector. Please see (Q309676) OLEXP: Norton Antivirus Causes Outlook Express 6 to Stop Responding for more information. Symptoms When you use Outlook Express to check mail, Outlook Express may return a time-out error message. You can successfully telnet to the server, but you cannot use Outlook Express to connect to the server. Cause Norton System Works includes an antivirus e-mail scan. This issue can occur if this Norton System Works antivirus e-mail scan is enabled; Outlook Express 6 times out when connecting to the mail server to send or receive email. This issue affects only Outlook Express 6. Workaround To work around this issue, disable the e-mail scan portion of Norton System Works. Next question how? Don't know exactly as I dont have Norton at the moment but if you check on Help or look through the settings / options there will be a tick box which will stop the check on outgoing emails. |

Dawnie, forgive me but haven't read all thru the thread but have you got a firewall with Norton? Maybe you have to disable it for you mail. Jen |

Ron - I went to the website you gave me the link for and they have a diagnostic programme. Apparently there is a problem with my installation that it couldn't fix and I think I need to uninstall and reinstall it! Thanks for the help. Kaye x |

I have seen this one before. It is the installation of Norton that is partly to blame. It happens because outgoing emails are being sent to Norton for checking before being sent out. Your email client thinks the job is done and disconnects. I'll need to look a bit further to find the solution, as there is a setting somewhere you need to change. Judy in the States has probably come across it before as well, if she has her ears on. |

Dawn, does your ISP have a helpline ?? Have you tried ringing them. Mind you they will probably tell you to uninstall Norton. You could try configuring the firewall. Ron www.genealogyprinters.com |

Ron When I changed everything it threw another wobbly. Only way i have managed to send one is to turn off the firewall on Norton which I suppose I will have to do everytime I want to send one. |

Sorry - popped off to do bit of Housework (didn't get much done lol). I have checked everything and it's all completely fine and as it should be - I've played around with it before but it never makes any difference. It's not a big deal anyway - I can send and receive emails ok, just keep getting annoying messages which I'm actually getting used to now. lol Hope you get yours sorted Dawn - all this security stuff they say we have to have, when we get it it causes problems! Dawn & Kaye, what are the settings for your e-mail account, open OE, click on Tools, Accounts, then the Mail tab, highlight your e-mail account then click Properties, go through the screens to make sure everything is entered correctly, your e-mail account should be something like pop3.yourisp*co*uk, your SMTP should be similar, smtp.yourisp*co*uk Automatic is what it should be Ron www.genealogyprinters*com |
