Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 7 Oct 2006 22:44

We have been at the school's allotment all day preparing to build one of these! Apparently there are several in Scotland, but we may have the first one in England :-)) (unless you know different of course!). We prepared over 750 2 litre bottles - cutting off the bases and removing the caps, rinsing them and sorting them by colour. We need another 700 to complete the structure, so there will have to be another full day! The framework was being built when we left. There were about 20 of us (parents, teachers and kids) and we also managed to paint the shed, dig over some of the ground and plant some bulbs. I'm absolutely knackered but we had fantastic weather and it was a great day! When it is complete I will post some pictures! Maz. XX

we were really lucky. some of the teachers went to a nearby Nandos and their drinks machines were broken so they were overrun with plastic bottles! they must have given us hundreds :-)) school sent out a letter asking for 2 litre round bottles - you should have seen the number of square, 1.5 litre, milk, shampoo, lunch bag size that people sent in grrrrrrrrrrrrr thankfully we can recycle plastic bottles here, so they won't go completely to waste Maz. thanks Lynda!! I'm as good a mummy as you are a nanny I reckon :-)) well, it wasn't really 20 parents ... there were 3 teachers with 2 hubbys, 2 kids and one sister (another teacher came with her toddler, but didn't do much), me and my two, 2 ex pupils - one brought his little sis, one other mum and 2 boys, one nan and grandchild and about 4 other kids whose parents didn't stay! We were the only ones who turned up at 9.30 - we stayed till 4pm! and NO I don't think it was a good turn out at all! although it was about what I expected - which is a different question lol they had a 'ground force' day there to clear the jungle from the allotment a couple of weeks ago - we couldn't go so I don't know how many bothered there. we are going to be in the local rag though :-)) Maz. Sounds interesting and great that you take an interest, that is what your children will remember in years to come. What exactly is a plastic bottle greenhouse? We used some of our large water bottles with the bottoms cut off and inserted upside down into the grow bags when we planted tomatoes etc, as it was easy to fill the bottles daily and the water seeped down the neck into the root system without washing away the compost. Hi Maz when I was on holiday in Egypt there was a house made out of bottles (glass) filled with water, they keep cool in summer and warm in winter, very even temperature. Hope yours turns out well would love to see pictures, it's good to recycle and teaches the children what life is all about, growing and using things that would have been thrown away. Chris.

Maz, Well done on a fantastic initiative! Fascinated by this, I googled 'plastic bottle greenhouse' and found an instruction sheet on the moraywastebusters site - maybe this would help others who've declared an interest. Keep up the great work. Regs Annie

Well done Maz. What would schools do without parents helping out. When my kids were at primary school they asked for volunteers to dig a pond. Everybody said 'oh what a good idea I'll be there' well you've guessed it, 6 parents turned up. Then on Monday morning some were moaing because it wasn't finished!!!! but were they there the next weekend helping, no of course they wasn't. Give yourself a gold star lol. Sue
