Hi Can anyone help with a double birth please I was looking for George McNaught who,s parents were John McNaught and Jean Balmour ..I have found 2 births 1 is 1838 December and the other is 16 March 1845 ... at first I thought maybe the first George died and that was why in 1845 the named there new son after the first one ...but I can not find a death for either of them any help greatly appreciated sorry i should have said born Glasgow Scotland ..

GlasgowLass Report 16 Apr 2018 00:04

Although both are found on Scotland's people, these are baptisms
A death would only be found on a mortcloth record, if it was placed on one and the mortcloth survived.

Both birth/baptism entries are listed under different index Nos which clarifies that the child born in 1838 was not the same one who was baptised in 1845

I would suggest that you purchase the 1845 one as both his birth and baptism date should be listed.
If he doesn't appear on any census with his parents (especially 1851), it would probably indicate that both children died infancy

Scottish bmds are found only on Scotland's People, which is not a subscription site. People have to buy credits to see the full record.

You can look up for free and see if there are any records, as GlasgowLass has done above, and then decide if you want to buy the credits yourself.

I suspect they are both born to the same couple, and the name reused after the first one died..

I think this might be the one born 1845 in the 1851 census:

Note there is also a John McNaught, a couple of years older than George, also a lodger.

This might be his birth to the same parents:

John McNaught born c1843 seems to have married in Holborn, London, the area he was in for the 1861 census I posted earlier:

Marriages Sep 1869
ABBOTT Eliza Holborn 1b 951
McNAUGHT John Holborn 1b 951 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
TRUELOVE James Holborn 1b 951
WHISTON Mary Ann Holborn 1b 951<<<<<<<<<

Marriage register shows his father to be a John McNaught, a compositor, which ties in with the occupations of John jr and George in 1861, though John has become a compositoe by the time of his marriage:

Name: John McNaught - carrier
Gender: Male
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 12 Jul 1869
Marriage Place: St John, Clerkenwell, Islington, England
Father: John McNaught - compositor
Spouse: Mary Ann Whiston
Register Type: Parish Register

Spouse's father John James Whiston, a cabinet maker. Bride and groom both of Little Sutton St. Witnesses John James Whiston and Elizabeth Ann Wright.

I'd already posted that 1841 census with the two children David and Mary, whose baptisms are already on the thread, Safc, though your version is more readable.

And.... you have the occupation for John senior as compositor, which helps link the John and George in the 1851 and 1861 census back to John McNaught and Jean Balmour. So that's ace! :-)

hi Kucinta

your 1841 does not say john is a compositor
so i posted it

That's brillian safc, as it ties in with the occupations of the John and George McNaught in 1861 in Holborn, and with John's father's details on the 1869 Holborn marriage.

?
so it looks like george did die and they named the next son george

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 16 Apr 2018 01:58

That's what I reckon, George I looks to have died before census 1841, as they just have David born 31/01/1837 and Mary born 02/02/1841, which tallies with her being aged 4 months in the 1841 census, as that took place in June.

So what happened to John McNaught senior and wife Jean???? Also daughter Mary?

That's interesting Chris.

I'm inclined to believe that the George McNaught who married Elisa Allen in Ireland in 1857 is NOT the son of John McNaught and Jean Balmer/Balmour, but I could be wrong.

Census 1881

If this is the Samuel from that thread, and I note the wife of father George is Jane not Elisa, though it may be a later marriage, then that George was born in IRELAND c1826 :

Possibly Jean's birth - although the 1841 (not necessarily accurate) makes her 5 years younger:

JEAN
GEORGE BALMUIR/MARY WRIGHT FR2293 (FR2293)

Note parents' names George and Mary, which recur in Jean's children's names (though admittedly common names).
Also note the surname Wright - also a common name, but that 's the surname of one of the witnesses to the marriage of Jean & John's son John .
